Getting 8+1 into a Mossberg 590

I have a Mossberg 590 that I bought used from a local pawn shop:

From everything that I've researched online, it's supposed to have 8+1 capacity, but I just cannot get that 8th round to load in the mag. I'm loading Federal #6 and Winchester slugs into it, and the best I can do is 7+1: Is there something I'm missing here? Is it a follower issue I'm running into or a spring thing or something else? This is my first defensive shotgun, so any help at all would be appreciated.

The 590 comes in different configurations, yours might be 7+1.

That appears to be a 500 Persuader, not a 590. The Persuader has a 7 shot tube with the standard take down screw in the end. The 590 has an 8 shot tube with a metal cap, not the screw. If you can post a closeup of the take down screw, you'd know for sure.

That's is a good looking shotgun and maybe the problem isn't that it is not a 590... but the type of ammo.

i have a 590 that i cant load 8 shot into the tube if i use slugs, i can only use 7+1 because if you look closely winchester slugs are somewhat longer...than #6, if you only load #6 maybe you can get 8+1 but if you load slugs you may ge 7+1

if you load 3'' slugs or buckshots you'll only get 7+1.

wrong. a lot of the 500 persuaders are actually as much as a 6 shot 590a1 in my area and the same relatively as a 590 special purpose. mossberg puts a high price premium on that extra 1.5" of barrel and extra round capacity. Their higher priced defensive pumps aren't even their nicest, usually.

I think it's 8+1 in. 2 3/4" in and 7+1 in 3" in.

The Persuader is an 8 round = 7 + 1 long-magazine, special barreled, version of the standard 500 (which is a 5 + 1 = 6 INCLUDING most 3" magnums gun).

The long 590's are 8 + 1 = 9.
