If you treat them with confidence, they'll wonder why you're not scared and generally not screw with you.

I also think that folks that aren't true "gangstas" but adopt the look will sometimes get off on scaring the "white bread polite suburban" types.

Hard to tell who is truly "hard", but saying please and thank you probably won't help. Not sure there is one right answer on this, except to be constantly using SA, and even that might not be 100%.
