Another LEO shooting in Florida:

CNN said:
TAMARAC, Florida (AP) -- One sheriff's deputy was killed and another was wounded after being gunned down during a routine traffic stop, authorities said Sunday. A search for the suspect or suspects was under way.

Deputy Brian Tephford called for backup after he was shot at a condominium late Saturday, according to the Broward Sheriff's Office. Shortly after Deputy Corey Carbocci arrived, both deputies were fired on before they had a chance to fire their own weapons, authorities said.

"It would appear that they were taken totally by surprise by this shooting," Sheriff Ken Jenne told television station WTVJ.

Tephford, 34, a six-year veteran of the department, was pronounced dead early Sunday. It was not immediately known if he was wearing a protective vest.

Carbocci, 37, who was wearing a protective vest, was listed in stable but guarded condition at Broward General Medical Center, according to the sheriff's office.

I can't believe there is a patrol officer in S. Florida (or anywhere, for that matter) who wouldn't be wearing a vest on-duty so I'm guessing it's just vague reporting based on incomplete facts -- but does anyone know the Broward departmental policy. Perhaps Deputy Tephford was shot outside the vest area, so the vest wasn't mentioned to the reporter by the police/hospital spokesman?

[edit]: According to the report: The first deputy was shot & called for backup, then both deputies were shot at "before they had the chance to fire their own weapons". Doesn't make sense to me, since Deputy Carbocci was apparently responding to an officer down call and would have known it was a hostile situation.

Prayers to the families.

Let's see: they were responding to a "shots fired" and "officer down" call, so they were surprised when somebody started to shoot at them upon arrival? Hmmmmmmm :barf:

Deputy Tephford originally was a Detention Deputy that was cross-trained, and transferred to Law-Enforcement. He was not wearing a vest while doing his overtime detail. From what I understand, he was shot upon exiting his vehicle. Deputy Carbocci was shot as soon as he responded to the call for help.

Deputy Tephford leaves behind his wife, a set of young twins and a 4-year-old daughter.

Normally, you wouldn't hear me saying this, but this time I hope the four scumbags responsible choose to hide out in a certain wood up near the center of the state.
