Hi all, new here, looking for help. I have a 1948 browning a-5 in good condition, but I cannot get the speed load feature to work.

With the chamber open, I should be able to introduce a shell into the bottom, which should then feed automatically into the chamber, and should allow me to continue to feed into the magazine.

However the only way I can do the above is to press in the bolt release button. Magazine cut-off is in the correct position.

Is there a trick to re-assembling that I've missed?

Thanks

You have to have the 2 piece cartridge lifter for this feature to work with out pushing release, which was introduced on FN built guns that have the cross bolt safety(or maybe the first post war guns didn't have them yet!). You can put one in if you like the gun, by buying used parts on e bay or the necessary parts at Brownells or Gunparts.BTW maybe your gun is an "American Browning" built by Remington, which did NOT have the feature!
