I noticed on my old BLR (Belgian pre-81 308) that the forearm only touches the barrel at the far front end, on a small curved wooden block that appears to be glued into the forearm. Another thing I noticed is, that block no longer contacted the barrel because it had worn over time from being fired, so there was a small gap there.

I have heard of guys that removed the front barrel band on BLR to help promote accuracy by making it a full floating barrel- personally I've always had better luck by bedding a gun that had a barrel band, such and the SMLE No. 4 Mk 1 sporter I have.

Has anyone here removed the barrel band from a BLR and if so, what was the result in accuracy ? They are easy to remove by driving out the pin.

Or, should I shim the front barrel bed with a piece of business card so it touches the barrel a bit like it originally did from the factory ?
