My current custom rifle project, which is in the works, as we speak: I'm having a custom scout mount fabricated (similar to AO Express for Marlin 336) for my Ruger .44 Deluxe Carbine, circa 1970. The base will be made from picatinny rail bar stock, and I will use quick detachable, back-to-zero rings for a Tasco Pro-Point red dot sight. Also included will be ghost ring rear sights and front post sights. All metal to be finished to match the rifle (black parkerized).
This should make an ideal fast handling, brush, swamp, hog and deer rifle for south Louisiana. I have already taken ten deer with this rifle with a 2.5x Bushnell Banner shotgun-scope mounted on see-through rings, but I found that I never used the open sights through the see-through rings. I think the low mounted red-dot sight, both-eyes-open, scout method, with ghost ring sight backup method will work well. What do you think?

I will post pictures when the rifle is finished.

Keano,
I'm building a another "scout"as well, the action is a 1917 enfield in .338-06. It has the ashley mauser scout mount that was customized to fit my barrel. The scope will be a burris 2.75X scout in Leupold weaver QR rings. The factory military sights will stay on as a back-up. The stock is a boyds lamanated and the entire gun will be beadblasted then hot blued for a look simular to the spray on teflon. It should be finnished by the end of the month.
I already have a Guide Gun 45-70 with the ashley mount and a burris 2.75X scout scope in Leupold weaver QR rings. The fixed sights are from Wildwest guns in Ankorage Ak.

Is someone in Lafayette doing the work?

Northwest,
The work is being done by Mike Brazda, of Bayou Teche Guns in Arnaudville, LA. (about 20 miles northeast of Lafayette) Mike once had a shop in Lafayette, Brazda's Top Gun, maybe you remember it.
Good luck on your project

Both projects sound like a lot of fun! I have three Scout-type rifles I use in brush hunting: a Steyr Scout and a Savage Scout, both in .308, with Leupold 2.5x Scout scopes, and a Marlin 336 with the Express Sights forward scope mount, also with the Leupold scope. Very fast-handling for tight shooting circumstances, and the local deer and hogs think they're an unfair advantage... :D

We'll have to organize a Louisiana shoot, where we can all show off our collections - particularly Scout rifles!

I have 3 scout rifles too ! the first is a 600 Remington .308 with a custom pedestal weaver rail with a Leupold 2X , it has a n 18" 'buggy whip" barrel and in its Brown precision stock weighs 5lb 10 oz. the ghost ring pop up sights are fabicated and it has a 700 bolt handle welded on. I had it made in 1980! the second is a Marlin 45-70 SS Guide gun this has a brite finished Leupold 2x in Ashley mounts , nickle Leupold lever rings and Ashley Express ghost sights. The last is a 7mm 1935 DWM Brazilian carbine with the rear sight replaced with a scope mount and has a Burris 2.75 scope. It is kinda a loaner deer gun.

That sounds like it will be a great rig! I can't wait to see the pictures.

I'm a big fan of the scout concept. Here's mine.

It's made by Eagle. I got it at Thunder Ranch a few years ago. I had it on my 700P but I am much happier with it on my scout.

Did you do the work on your Moisin yourself? It looks good. How does it shoot?

Thanks. It started as a sporterized Jungle Carbine that I rescued from a local shop. It had a rusty bore so I had it replaced with a surplus 2 groove, cut the barrel to 19" and had an Ashley scout mount and front sight installed.

The scope is a Leupold Scout scope. The stock is a Ram Line.

It's a great shooter and a fine hunting partner. You can read a little article about it over at Steve Redgewell's "Saving a Burnt Out Jungle Carbine"

I have been hunting with scout setups for several years now. a lot of people don't understand them but they work great for me!
