looking at a bsa sweet 17 scope 6-18x 40
anybody use one of these if so is it any good. i want to mount it on a marlin 917 vsf

I've got a BSA sweet 22 that works great on my Marlin 60. 2x7 power on it.

I have a sweet 17 on my Savage. I have mixed feelings about it. It is clear enough, and has held up. I just have an issue with the top turret, it is too easy to move. Last year I went squirell hunitng, and when I pulled my rifle out of the case, and noticed it had moved. I put it back on the zero setting, and went hunting. I was 0/7 at the end of the day so I stopped at the range on the way home. It was shooting waaaay high. I thought the drum only turned 1/4 revolution. It in fact had turned 1 1/4 revolution. Not too bad of an issue, but defintiely something to consider.

Other than that, it works great. The drop compensator is true out to at least 200 yards. I have never shot it further than that, and that has just been plinking at the range. Good luck

The ones they tested on Savageshooters crapped out after about 6 months. I've heard that Pentax makes a 6x mildot that is nice, and the dots range almost perfectly for the 17.

I have 2 Sweet 22 scopes a 6x18 on my 10/22 T and a 3x9 on my Savage 93 22WMR, and a Sweet 223 on my AR15. I have not had any problems out of these scopes and they are dead on when used correctly. The set screws did come loose on the 223,but I probably did not tighten them down enough at first and have not come loose since. I bought these scopes not for the price, but for what they do well. BSA makes a good product, but just like everything else people bad mouth them because they are cheaper priced than others. I can't see spending several hundred dollars on a scope for a gun that is only going to be used every so often out in the field. If it was going to be used every day or in a situation where your life may depend on it I can see having top quality optics on a gun. I do have a couple of high end Nikon scopes on my big game rifles, but then common sense tells you that a lower priced scope will not handle the recoil of a large caliber gun.

I tried BSA twice.... TWICE, and I knew better. There is a saying over on
rimfirecentral, " If it says BSA, then run away!"
