I picked up some brass from the range I shoot at today. All once fired 40S&W and PPU -223. The 223 filled a 5 gallon bucket to where it was almost over flowing. How many 223 cases do you think it takes to fill a 5 gallon bucket? I haven’t had time to count it.

The cops have been practicing. I already picked up 2,800 40S&W cases the other day.

And 90% shot through a Glock, probably.

100% shot through G22‘s, and that’s what I’m going to shot it through too. The newer G22’s have more case support than the G17’s.

I just resized some PPU - they are harder to resize & would get stuck easily. I put them aside & got better lube & no stuck cases.

.223 is 72 qty per pound on average.

Good haul. They look pretty clean.

I talked to firearms instructor who teaches for a local College, took enough brass to the recycler to net $1100:eek: Must of been quite a haul:D

Get a small base (Lee "U" die) for the glocked up .40. I saw in the USPSA magazine where someone is doing a die mod that pushes the brass all the way through to get rid of glock bulges. Congrats on your haul, wish I was at that range. I'd love to know the how many answer too, I've got about 15 gallons of .223 right now.

My guess is about 4,000 qty on the .223, but I'm probably way off. I don't even know how much I have.

Well Bullet...Start counting. Let us know what you find...

I think I’ll just use WNTFW’s method -

The 223 weights 55lbs not counting the bucket. So 55 X 72 = 3,960 cases.

WNTFW your 4,000 cases guess looks like it should be real close. Thanks.

If I purchased once fired 223 brass it would run probably at least $70.00 per 1,000 so, I figure this should be worth around $280.00. I’ve got at least 4,000 40 S&W cases all Fed headstamp probably worth $45.00 per 1,000 so I figure this should be worth $180.00. Add both together and I get $460.00 not including shipping if I purchased this.
Sometimes it pays to pick-up brass.

Bullet,
Sometimes I get things right. Sometimes I predict things with a high degree of accuracy. Never anything that nets me a profit but it's fun anyway.

The PPU I had did have crimped primers also. Really was the hardest .223 I've dealt with. Once I got the case lube working it went well using a Dillon 550B & Dillon dies.

That’s what I use for my 9mm, 40, and 45 Glocks.

What lube did you find that works?

Luckily I have a Dillon Super Swage 600 and a Giraud Power Trimmer. Makes it easier.

But I like exact counts...

You like exact counts …Sooo come on over and Start countin' The Bushmaster...

I did the same after our local PD's trained at the range I shoot at. After a few session I had enough to load over 5500 rounds (and another 2500 yet to go) without spending a single dime for brass. The only bitch I had was that it was allmost all crimped. Oh well, the price one has to pay for free brass.

Bullet,
You have brass in quantity, a Dillon Swager & a Giraud.
You may have used up your 3 wishes.
If not please don't tell us about your hot wife & the Ferrari.
We've had enough for 1 day.

I use Hornady 1 shot that I'm not overly impressed with.
I was looking for imperial die wax locally with no luck. I ended up picking up some used single stage equip & Lee Lube was in there & that worked adequate-lee.

There are some case lube substitutes that seem interesting but I'm sticking with case lube at this time.

In general the brass headstamped from that part of the world seems to be harder to resize in my experience. NNY, S&B, & 1 other I can't recall correctly at the moment. There is also the issue of how the individual rifle it came out of is affecting the size. Not the biggest factor but one none the less. But it seems universal enough to blame the brass.

I need to reload some pistol rounds to let the 550b run at full song. The bottleneck rifle stuff is a bit interrupted with the case trimming. Everything I'm doing is once fired. No second reloading of my reloads as of yet.

something you guys might want to try:

Mink Oil for case lube.

Works GREAT!! Better, in fact, than the Lee stuff- no dried residue on the cases, and it goes a loooong way

JeepGeek,
I just saw that in the What Clever Sticky at top.
I seen a few different here & there. I need to compile them & try a few just to see.
Thanks,
WNTFW

.357mag, 78.3gr/ea, 89.4cases/#, 11.2#/1000

.45acp, 89.58gr/ea, 78.1cases/#, 12.8#/1000

.44mag, 114.38gr/ea, 61.2cases/#, 16.3#/1000

50bmg, 865.26gr/ea, 8.1cases/#, 123.5#/1000

All weights are uncleaned fired cases with the primer remaining.

Individual case weights were derived using an average of mixed brass weights (except 50bmg)

So, if you picked up 8#?s of 45 brass: 8# X 78.1cases/# = 625 cases+/-

If you use 1gal ziploc freezer bags to store your brass, each (full) bag contains:

9mm, 15.6#, 1836cases
40s&w, 12.2#, 1219cases
45acp, 11.4#, 890cases
223, 11#, 809cases

or if you use the 5gal bucket method

9MM = 8500-9000 pieces
.40 S&W = 7000-7500 pieces
.45 ACP = 3800-4000 pieces

If you weigh them you'll get pretty close
