I am not a 9mm guy.

My friend has asked for advice on a good reliable inexpensive 9mm semi-auto. New or used...

Any helpful suggestions?

Ruger P95 maybe?
Damn, you beat me to it. A ruger P95 was my first gun. It is a great handgun, Both dual and single action, simple, accurate and very affordable. If your buddy plans on carrying it, it has one of the best features I think you can have in a carry gun. The ability to carry a chambered round safely. You can chamber a round, de-cock the hammer, and carry with either the safety on, or safety off, ready to fire with a nice heavy dual action trigger pull. Remaining shots will be light trigger pull, SA. Not to mention the availability of 30 round mags. Sorry if I sound too excited, but it is a great gun for a great price, and He will definitely be very happy. I paid $275 for mine used, in new condition. Brand new ones can be had for $325, and they now have a picatinny rail in front of the trigger guard. Rated for +p ammo, very tough gun and can handle anything.

Any 2nd or 3rd gen S&W 9mm. They can usually be had in the $300 range. They are tough as nails, accurate and very very reliable.

A few questions: What is your buddy use to shooting ? What will be the primary and secondary uses of this 9mm pistol? What is your buddy's definition of cheap ?

Mil surplus and police trade ins at places like AIM Surplus are a great source of high quality weapons at low prices.

If a very cheap new, reliable 9mm is wanted, have him look at Hi-Point. Ugly, ungainly and heavy, but they work and have a great reputation for factory warranty.

There's a LGS in Indy that has Keltec P11's for about $275, or $280. That's a handy little 9mm at a reasonable price. It's not a Ruger, but it's cheaper. My DSW has one & loves it.

What is he going to use it for? IMHO it is tough to make a very meaningful suggestion without that piece of info. Also, define inexpensive. Often people have very difference ideas about what is inexpensive. What is the exact price range.

Holy crap CT, that's the cheapest I've ever seen one new.

Yep, pretty much. They actually ran a sale last year and I got one for $249 new. I wait for the deals.

Hi Point is an option but for a little more you are getting a Ruger with a proven track record of reliability.

I also say a Ruger P95. I bought a stainless one for $330 from Bud's Gun Shop. After FFL transfer I had $350 invested. Great price for a decent 9mm pistol.

I have seen the SR9. Bud's has this gun for $398 delivered which is a an awesome gun at an awesome price.

Let us know how much he wants to spend.

FWIW:

I had a KelTec P11 that was flawless...

Pulling the slide back made a sound of sandpaper rubbing on more sandpaper, but the little sucker was cheap to buy, and never missed a lick.

Just sayin'.. :)

Jesse

P.S. Don't know anything about the Ruger P95, but if all else is comparable, I'd buy a Ruger over a KelTec in a heartbeat.. The little P11 sure made for easy cc tho.

I got a Ruger P95 new for $315 with a stainless slide.

Cheapest 9mm I'd buy that is reliable.

A Stoeger Cougar isn't bad either, but they have gone up in price the past couple of years

That said the following are guns that can be had for $400 or less (this is not likely to be an exhaustive list as it is only what I can think of off the top of my head).

Used glock

Taurus PT92 (New is around $400 often a bit over used should be under $400)

3rd gen smith and Wesson

Steyr M9 or M9A1 (I really like these guns.)

Bersa Thunder

Norinco 213B, its essentially a 9mm tokarev.

RIA 9mm 1911

The rugers mentioned above

Kel tecs mentioned above (although the pf9 and p11 would not be my choice for anything other than a carry gun and personally have I prefer other guns for even that role)

Sig p6

A new S&W Sigma 9VE can be had for a little over $300 and then S&W has their rebate going on right now. $50 back or two free magazines. The Sigma trigger is much like a DA revolver trigger. Mine has been quite reliable in close about 800 - 900 rounds. Not one failure that I can remember. Shoot, now that I'm thinking about it I may pick up another one myself. . .
