Bug out pistol?

Why not a Ruger Charger? It's the 10/22 pistol and uses same mags, so you can share mags with your buddies.

I don't know if HI allows NFA, but if you are going with a 22LR option for BO...get a suppressor and really make that 22LR shine.

I think a Glock 23 would work well for that. Good capacity, good punch, and a good size gun to conceal yet use effectively. I don't see hunting as being a part of a bug out scenario in my area. It would be strictly for self defense.

Glock 23 gen 04; Ruger LCR .22wmr .....

I agree the Glock 23 .40S&W gen 04 would be a great choice. It's compact, takes white lights or laser aimers, offers good power & you can quickly change out barrels-calibers(with add-ons/barrels).

Another good choice IMO for "disaster zones/declared emergencies" would be the Ruger LCR .22wmr snub. It's easy to clean, light weight, easy to conceal & offers decent CQB range defense. You can add XS big dot sights & a Lasermax Centerfire red laser.
A few major ammunition makers(Winchester, Speer Gold Dot) now list .22wmr rounds for concealed defense.

What about a .22 conversion kit?

I've been eyeing the Advantage Arms kits. On, say, a Glock 19, it would allow use of .22LR in addition to the 9mm.

Edited to add: I see some previous posters did mention .22 conversion kits. I should add that a lot of them are pretty light in weight and would therefore not make for a very heavy multi-caliber kit.

If told to stick to .22LR, I'd say try as many as you can. My personal fave is a Ruger 22/45 (polymer frame), with a short, tapered barrel like the original Ruger .22 autopistol had. It's a fairly light pistol, it's slim, and it's more accurate than I am. It has fixed sights, but that's never bothered me.

All my best,
Dirty Bob

I'd agree with the conversion. I have a Kimber conversion kit on a Raptor Pro and I could survive off small game it can harvest. Very acceptable accuracy but it is fussy about ammo to cycle reliably.
1911 wouldn't be my first choice for a bug out gun though. Love to hear how the Glock kits shoot.

You people who are suggesting a conversion kit have no clue what it means to bug out.

Most that BO are trying to go light and only carry the essentials. Having to bring two different mags and ammo is not keeping things KISS.

I'm pretty certain if I were in a one-gun B-O-G scenario..

I wouldn't be relying on a firearm relying on a magazine.

.357 and whatever .38-.38+p-.357 can get thrown in a pocket.

Personally, I agree with the commenters that a .22 pistol isn't ideal in a bug out situation

I also agree that the Ruger SR-22 pistol is an excellent .22LR pistol

But if I was forced to pick one .22LR to take with me, I'd go with the zip .22

Highly modular, serviceable, runs on common 10/22 mags, can be mounted to the zip stock or any firearm with a pic rail (suppressed zip .22 undermounted on a AR-15 would be a filthy bug out combo)

Given that I've never seen a reliable ZIP or even read a review that said the ZIP was reliable, this seems like horrible advice. They're uncomfortable, awkward, and unreliable. Seems like a trifecta of terrible features.

A lot of guys I know choose a 10-22 as their bug out gun. Is there a bugout pistol in 22lr, in case you are in a situation to have to conceal your firearm?

My daily carry pistol would be the choice. 9mm Glock

My Charter Arms 9mm PITBULL is my bug out gun.

I may get a SCCY CPX sometime in the future to take that role.

My bug out pistol is the same pistol I carry daily. My Taurus 709 slim, 9mm single stack 7+1 with an extra magazine.

If forced to bug out, I would not leave the gun I am most familiar with behind in favor of something else in a different caliber. If anything, I'd be adding more guns on top of my EDC, like my AR and a 12 gauge or two.

I've fallen out of love with all things .22lr. Maybe it's because I'm not willing to pay the going rate for it, when I can buy 5.56x45 or 12 gauge 7 1/2 shot for just a little bit more, or that I don't particularly care for the .22 plinking rifle I have due to magazine capacity and availability (and how quickly they tend to wear out). All this combined has me actually thinking of liquidating all my .22 weapons and ammo.

Anybody ever read Robert Heinlein's book, "Tunnel in the Sky?" In it, the main character is going off on a survival exercise, and seeks advice from his sister, an officer in the imperial space rangers or some such organization about which gun to take. She tells him to forget the gun, and carry a good knife.

Her reasoning is that his job is to survive. Not to get into gun fights. Having an adequate weapon to really defend oneself with, in her view, tends to make one careless. Being basically unarmed tends to make that same person feel very small and vunerable. They seek to stay out of sight, move carefully, and avoid conflict.

That made sense to me back many years ago, when I first read the book, and still does to this day. I don't think I'd want to rely on just a knife, but a 22 is about one step above a knife. It's not made for battle, but in a REAL pinch will fill in.

I'm an old man now, with a handicapped wife. I ain't bugging out nowhere. But if I was a young man, I think a 10/22 and maybe a Ruger standard with a 4" barrel and fixed sights would do me just fine. I'd just try to make myself very small and inconspicious.

(To tell the truth, one or the other, rifle or pistol, would probably get ditched pretty quickly once I started to lug the weight around.)

I carry a Ruger Single Six-5.5" barrell in .22 magnum on the farm. Would think that a .22lr pistol with 4-6" barrrel and good sights a better way to go than some little 2" barrell gun for bug-out.

I took the OP to mean that if someone has decided on taking a .22LR rifle as a bug-out gun, what would be a good concealable pistol in the same caliber to go with it? I think any reasonably compact and prone reliable .22 pistol or revolver would work fine. Personally, I'd even look hard at the little Taurus knock-offs of the tip up Berettas as the one hand operation and ease of loading single rounds could prove useful. The key factors I understood from the OP were easy concealment and sharing the same ammo as the primary .22 rifle. As I have said before, when I have heard things go bump in the night I have never felt under armed with a Marlin Papoose loaded with hypervelocity ammo. No, it's not a one-shot man-stopper, but I don't know anyone that would volunteer to be shot with it.

If you can find one, consider the HK 4, the first pistol made by HK. It has an alloy frame, and interchangeable barrels & mags for .22 RF, .25, .32 and .380.
You'll have a better chance of finding ammunition for it if you run out.

The HK 4 is a bit spendy, if you find a good one.

G30, two extra mags. Should get me home, and then I'd hole up. Home is safer than anywhere I could bug out to.
