I've seen a few threads reference this in passing but they never really go into detail about the project. Since 7.62x39 is the primary round in our house I'm interested in a bolt action in this caliber.

My understanding is that folks are starting out with a Savage or a Steven's and swaping out the barrels? How does one go about this? Are there any major advantages to going this route instead of the CZ 527 Carbine?

I don't think anyone here would say the could build a better, more beatiful, more accurate 762.39, than a cz 527, it is why I have one.\
remmy also made a few single shot falling block types, for about 250 bucks, would like to know more about these, if any dudes have shot them. Bang for the buck on that price is tough to beat.

I built one on a stevens 200 as well as owned a CZ527

beauty is subjective

better for what

But more accurate, the Stevens shoots circles around the CZ

It's time to go to work I'll post details later

H&R and Rossi make or have made x39mm rifles. Single shot, though.

krokus, make sure you tell us about the ammo as well. I shoot all the euro crap, new and milsurp through the cz, and it is super, duper, accurate, with even the most junkiest of junk ammo.

If someone offers you a Ruger 77 MKII in that 7.62X39 walk away from it no matter what the price. I have one and it will hit something really big at 100 yards. POS. The type of ammo makes no difference.

About four months ago, I got a H&R 7.62x39 single shot off Gunbroker. What an accurate rifle! There was one session at the range when I shot 20 rounds and ended up with 14 inside a 2 inch circle. I've got a .308, a .270, a 25-06, a 243 and yet, if I get a chance to go to Western Maryland (where they allow rifle hunting), I might take the H&R. It's THAT accurate.

TMC,

What kind of ammo are you using?

Also, if you're using surplus, have you had any issues with failure to fires?

John

Any comments on the Remington 799 in 7.62x39 ?

I'd prefer this to the CZ as you can more easily thead the barrel for a silencer.

My 7.62x39 AR15s are MOA accurate with decent loads. My Ruger 77MkII is equally accurate with the same loads. Dunno why my experience does not mirror that of others, but it is my experience nonetheless.

To those that want to build a 7.62x39 carbine, I have to ask - why go thru the trouble of making a 7.62x39 carbine and then ruin it by making it a push feed? If you want the best all-around chambering in a do-it-all rifle, at least do it CRF. That means finding a pre-Remington (Interarms) or Remington Zastava, finding a CZ, or finding a Ruger 77MkII.

Tyris-

The 799 is a turd based every one I've handled (dozens). The bedding is crap at best, barrels are subpar and burn out fast, and the bolt tends to drag and scrape.

Get a Savage (old models can go for <$200 used), get the barrel nut wrench, and learn to take your bolt apart. Brownells has instructions. Doing this now for a bench rifle. Cheap? No. Good? Oh, yeah.
