Looking for suggestions for a rifle stock my son can grow with. He is 10 and just got buck fever. Told him next year I'd take him on youth season. I have a savage 16 in 308. Bottom bolt release. I wanted to put it in a stock that has an AR style stock so we can change the LOP quickly and easily. Any suggestions?

Here's another suggestion, off topic.

Handload a couple boxes of .308 using .30-30 data. 150 grain bullet at 2100 fps. Perfectly safe and plenty for any deer.

Your boy will thank you.

Not a chassis/ar15 style, you dont mention budget, so if that's an issue, Boyd's at-1, and I'll second either light loading it by hand, or Hornady custom lite ammo.

Never thought about loading down some ammo for him. Feel kinda stupid for not. Glad you brought that up. I do load my own. I'm gonna look up some data for this now

Get a decent chassis that your budget allows. Some can cost as much or more than the rifle itself. The Boyds AT-1 stock is another good option that is more budget friendly.

Making reduced loads or even trying Hornady's new subsonic ammo is a good choice to help with recoil.

A proper fitting stock and manageable recoil will make shooting more enjoyable for your son.

That Boyd's stock looks like a good option. I'd hate to sink to much money into a rifle for a young one. I think I'll keep it as cheap as I can and still functional. After he gets some years on him and his arms are longer we can build up something better.

How much does the AT-1 weigh? I haven't seen one in person but on their website it appears to be a big chunk of wood and the kid is only 10. Depending on his size he might be turned off of hunting by having to carry a heavy rifle.

I'm not terribly concerned about the weight. Right now my boy shoots my 6.5 CM. It has an arca plate with a tripod and ball mount he likes to use. Only problem is the stock is so long. I stand behind him with my hip on the buttstock. I plan to put an arca plate on whatever stock I put on this rifle.

Where we hunt it's a short walk to a ground blind. The blind has plenty of room for both of us and the rifle on a tripod.

I see you found my post before I deleted it as I found it not necessary after your comment about the AT-1 while I was typing. It appears you have it pretty easy to hunt in your area. I have to deal with a lot of footsteps to do so here.

It's relatively light for a laminate stock. And the youngster will appreciate the recoil attenuation of any additional weight, even if he doesn't know it.
