Rodwa, certainly not so hard that a nipple pick, or touch hole pick, or even a plain old low tech paper clip would not reach inside the hole where the nipple was removed to loosen the powder. I have watched a fe3w episode of McGyver in my day.

Mec, not all healed cartridge bullets, or other bullets for that matter had grease grooves.

My ring tail Sharps mold has no grease grooves

Many teat fire bullets, lip fire, mule ear cartridges, Crispin cartridges, Gallagher, etc. had no grease grooves. The fact that you took care to only post pictures of bullets with grooves doesn't mean there were not thousands of bullets without. I'll post pictures later today.

It seems that not all .46 carbine bullets had external groove either but the pictures I found all had them.
You do not need to post pictures to make your point on my account. I will concede that your level of expertise exceeds any poor knowledge that I might have accumulated. I don't know what I did to micturate in your grits but there the same blocking mechanism that i am applying to your posts is also available to you.

seems likely you are right about that. A bullet that would be just fine in a Ruger Old Army might not work in a traditional design. Some of Clements Old Army deepened chambers seem to digest increased loads and heavy bullets rather well as does this no-longer- available conversion to 50 caliber. I think he made four or five of them and then discontinued them.

The mildest of added "weight" to the argument, but :

The bullet mould pictured produces 285g bullets using WW alloy. A pure lead bullet would be even heavier.

If he had the original chamber dimensions, he must have sheared quite a bit of lead off that bullet getting it to seat- which means mighty stiff seating, and increases the opportunity for an air pocket to develop. He might have even got some of that very generous lead shaving somehow between the bullet and the powder/wad- instant air space.

It does state with WW's, but it's actually sized to use lead. I asked, and measured myself.

I haven't tried, but with as hard as the powder has been to scrape from the nipple end I'd find it hard to believe that it would simply just crush further to load properly. This stuff is quite hard.

fdf: Still waiting for you to explain yourself, especially since you don't know me or my father.

"You are correct in your father's assessment of you."
