Buying a gun just for fun!

Wasp ----------- ya mean like this? Except it ain't just for fun. I take it with me when I play golf for the occasional coyote that may have something on its mind.

I meant no disrespect to the hunters I was thinking in terms of posting on pistols
Lots of people hunt with pistols, but I understand your question. I keep two pistols for self defense and have gone thru several in search of these final two. Others are just fun target shooting. My wife loves to shoot moving targets with her Mark III and has gotten really good at it.

Sniper: then you better be good to her because running is not going to help:p

Well... as hunting never had appeal (never invited to try it out), didn’t need any at work, and I knew that Red Dawn was ridiculous fantasy...

....all 25 of them- except for three Carry handguns.

And as cool as it might look, carrying an AKM or VZ down our sidewalk would look schizophrenic and attract blue lights.

While working in my friends gun shop we took in a group of firearms from a local plumber. He accumulated them over the years while doing work in houses and spotting them in the nooks and crannies. Among these was a old flintlock boys rifle. Although in rough condition it would have been a really great gun for me to apply some work on and make a shooter for rabbits and tree rats. It had a tag on it declaring its part in the defense of our local town during the Sioux uprising of the 1870's. I offered to take it off the owners hands but had no luck. He kept it for himself. Now that was my idea of a rifle just for fun. As it turned out my gun just for fun was a target rifle in 30-06 with a straight 1&1/8" heavy barrel that shot 1/2 MOA at 100 yards. I took a lot of 300+ yard prairie dogs with that rifle. Accuracy can also be fun.

Straight field plinking, my 60+ yr old Winchester 72 LR, tube fed bolt action, GSG Firefly .22 pistol.

I no longer hunt. None of my guns are considered tactical except maybe my Mossberg 500 that came with two barrels, 18.5 and 28 inch. I have one handgun that most would call a carry gun but I don't carry. All my guns are wood and metal. No plastic or camouflage. I like to find old guns and fix them up. Sort of a hobby. I like to shoot or plink. I will use a gun for self defense or home defense but I've never bought a gun for the sole purpose of using against other people. I just like guns. You could say just for fun.

Every gun I've ever owned was acquired with fun on my mind.

I didn't get any of my first couple of handguns to carry. When I got them, carrying in Ohio wasn't even legal. When it became legal, I didn't go out and get a dedicated carry gun. I got 4 or 5...had fun with all of them, then decided which to carry.

I've since upgraded more than once and don't have any of those 4 or 5 I picked up way back when. They just weren't much fun anymore. If it gets to the point I don't enjoy shooting the one I carry, I'll get rid of it too.

Maybe "on this forum" we mostly talk about guns in those two categories, but most of my wife's and my guns don't fall into either category. We each have guns for concealed carry and/or home defense, but most of our guns are for hunting (big game, varmints, pheasants and grouse, and waterfowl), and we don't even go to the "Range" - we used to shoot at one "Range" or another when we were shooting competitively (IHMSA) but that was a long time ago. We also have a couple of guns that we use for nothing other than pest control - mostly in the vegetable/berry garden.
Nevertheless, to answer your question - yes, I have a gun that I bought just because I thought it would be fun - my Glock 44. It turned out to not only be a lot of fun, I also use that little pistol as my "kit" gun while fishing, and I killed a few ground squirrels as well with it last spring. The fact that it's the same size as my Glock 19 (my favorite CCW) is a plus.
My wife has a little Ruger Bearcat that she uses for many of the same things - fun, her "kit" gun, and shooting close-range ground squirrels. Of course my wife's Bearcat is not at all like her favorite CCW - a Smith Shield EZ.
Just a few days ago I spotted a gun on the cover of a magazine in the grocery store that I thought would be a ton of fun - a Pedersoli "Howdah" pistol (double barrel, double trigger, .45 Colt/.410 shotgun with 10.25" barrels). As soon as I saw the price ($1,395) though, I even put the magazine back on the rack. My wife and I can't afford that much fun gun.
I have to admit I’m envious of you folks who have spouses who have similar interests, in this case, shooting sports. I have a lovely wife of 48 years, but she’s never had similar hobby interests of shooting, motorcycles, or vintage automobiles. On the other hand, I have no interest in knitting, jewelry making, or embroidery, so there’s that.

As to the OP question, I too bought a similar North American Arms tiny revolver because it looked like fun. It was, for a time, then it was sold to buy the next fun item. So why not indulge yourself, life is supposed to be fun.

I have about half a dozen "working" guns; ones that serve the sole purpose of a) putting meat in the freezer and/or b) eradicating varmints from the garden/orchard/chicken yard/etc. The other two dozen are strictly for fun, be it the fun of shooting or just the fun of "collecting". Most are old, some before WWI. Some, like my Henry Golden Boy, are new but are more for "lookin' at" than really shooting much. The GB does get shot, though. And heck, some days you just want to blow through a bunch of 22 LR and what better to do that with than a 10/22? So much so I have 2 of them!

At the end of the day, I think the whole point of buying/trading guns is for the fun of it. Heck, I've left my house on a Saturday morning with one gun, hit every pawn shop and LGS around, traded not less than five times, and came back home with one (sometimes two) gun that wasn't worth any more or less than the one I left with! But hey, it's something different and, most importantly, it's fun!

Pretty much all my guns are for fun; especially my shotguns which I use to shoot sporting clays, FITASC and - when I can find a ring - ZZ birds

They are all for fun, more or less. My latest one I’d the huge frame S&W 460 Magnum.
I enjoy watching my sons shoot it! Me, not so much, but I occasionally shoot it just the same!

75% of my guns are for fun, with the remainder a mix of self defense and hunting. My favorite fun gun is probably my Browning Buckmark. I'm also currently working on a A4-ish build which has no practical use other than I want to have a 20" AR15 rifle with irons. I'm also putting together a dedicated .22lr upper to exactly match my SHTF AR. While I could argue it'll provide cheap training, I really just want it to play with after shooting my daughter's 15-22.

I’m too poor to buy guns just “for fun”.

My massive Colt Python and H&K P7 collections are for self defense.

;)

I enjoy shooting a lot. Precise target and just plinking at junk. Self defense and hunting i like too. But only a few of my guns i use for hunting. And carry one sometimes 2 for self defense. Hope i never need to defend against another human.

I have found that this can be a slippery slope that often results in me shaking my head and asking myself "what was I thinking" when the newness wears off and I'm trying to get rid of that thing at a later time.

I'm kinda hoping to never need a gun to defend myself against anything. That would mean some situation unraveled quickly. Rabid squirrel chewing through the roof, or those mosquitoes they have down south the size of turkeys migrated to Ohio.
No thanks.

For me anyway shooting in general is fun, so I guess one would say 100% of my purchases are for fun. But I don't generally smile while shooting so how much fun can it be? Then again when I shoot a big boomer I do smile... a LOT! Oh well, I guess it's all relative, I don't smile having relations with the GF and that's DEFINITELY fun!!! :)
