Buying a high end 1911, which would you pick?

I was looking for a Baer and found a great deal on a used Brown Exec Target. Great gun. Found a good deal on a used PII 1.5" guarantee. Fantastic gun. Liked it so much I just bought a new PII 9mm. I will probably own a Wilson before I'm done. The 1.5" Baer is an amazingly accurate handgun.

gunjunky,

Let me know when you think you're going to come out toward Puyallup for the Marksman. Heck, I'll meet you out there and buy you lunch for your retirement. Least I could do for your years of service. PM me and let me know.

I would go with the Rock River Arms. Off shoot of Les Baer. Their weapons are just like the Baer (tight) but you can put more options in the RRA. It really borders on Custom. Spec it out the way you want.

I have a Ed Brown Kobra that is sweet! However, I recently bought a Colt Special Government Combat in Hard Chrome that is every bit as good as the Ed Brown.

Congrats on the retirement!

I am going to say Ed Brown or a Colt Special Combat.

I just plain do not like Les Baer's method of building 1911s.

CQB

A Wilson Combat CQB was my choice. I had them add all the features I wanted (which was most all of them), but they will build it as basic or as loaded as you want. Fusion Firearms is turning out a quality, but not widely know 1911, for half the price of a Wilson.

there is a few that i would be interested in in the "high end" that would be the wilson cqb like was said above.

i have also been looking at adding one of the rra carry models. they are reliable, accurate, and they are beutiful especiallywith the old fashioned blued finish.

i would also recomend the nighthawk custom line they have some great 1911's with some great features.

i don't know how exactly high end you want but that is a good start.

and i always recommend sa 1911, and all there firearms for that matter. i believe with sa you get some "high end" gun for the not so "high end" price points.

btw congrats on the retirement!

Heirloom Precision

Conrad,
Is that Ted Yost's work? I was not able to find the old Yost-Bonitz site, is this their new digs? Very nice guns, now you have me thinking, maybe I should just pull the S70 out of the safe and build that thing up into a true custom????

All,
Thanks for all the great replys. You all have provided some great ideas. The Colt special combat - I had not thought of that one - and it does say Colt on it.

This stuff is fun to think about:D

What I'd do.

You only retire once. Find a good 1911 smith and tell him exactly what you want, have it built on a springfield frame with top shelf parts. This way you get exactly what you want, not someone's package deal that's "close enough". Won't cost you much more, if any more. Wait time will be about a year unless you go with one of the biggies like Yost or Rodgers. Much longer for them.

I'll PM you the name of the 'smith that built mine if you'd like. Took ten months and I'm very happy with it.

1911 guy,
Spent a good part of the evening looking at 1911 smith's web sites. Would like to know which one you used.

Thanks

Ok, it may not be in the same category, but the new Dan Wesson Valor looks like a winner to me. And no forward slide serrations.

I still think you should handle a Dan Wesson before ruling them out. I also owned an Ed Brown, a Kobra Carry, and there is very very little difference between the two.... For the record I sold my KC and replaced it w/ a DW CBOB .45ACP and their new Valor.....

sloo50,

I have handled a number of the DW 1911's and they seem to be very nice guns. In fact I would like to have one of their 10mm pistols.

But I don't think they qualify as a high end gun, they are a very nice production pistol.

Yes that is Ted's new web site, Lou Bonitz moved away from AZ so they renamed the company. I think having your S70 done up is a great idea. Bob Miller of Miller custom does some great work as well.

Wilson CQB

I have a Wilson CQB 5" and couldn't be happier. Best gun i've ever shot. Got another Wilson on the way too.... Looked at Nighthawk but the one i really liked was the vickers and couldn't pony $3200 for it. I almost went with Ed Brown SF (without the slide markings too). All that said the Wilson is NICE!

Nighthawk Custom

I own a Nighthawk, a Brown, a Wilson, and a Springfield. I've handled Les Baers many times. For an all around 1911, I would buy the Nighthawk Custom again. Best one for me by far. I love the checkering that comes standard. GREAT customer service. No matter what I feed my Nighthawk, I can't get it to jam. It just feels and functions better than any 1911 I've ever shot. I want another one!

my vote is for Ed Brown. Wilson would be my 2nd choice and then Baer. i just dont like how tight the Baers are. i have owned several Baers, Wilsons, and a couple full house customs. my Ed Brown is the nicest 1911 i have ever owned in everyway. good luck in your decision.
