The Smith and Wesson Victory is a Lemon. Looking at the Ruger Mark IV but which one?

When I purchased my first 22lr gun I ended up choosing a browning buckmark strictly on how it felt in my hands. Both the browning and the ruger handguns are excellent , reliable and accurate shooters. You can't go wrong with which gun you choose, it is merely a question of aesthetics in which features appeal to you. But since you asked which one I would flip a coin between the hunter and the target competition, or buy one each.

Which one is the competition one?

Ruger fan. Are you going to put a suppressor on it? Matters as I prefer it light and short in that case and need it threaded. If not, longer and heavy is better in my mind.

Browning is nice though in that the upper is not the #'ed part like the Ruger so you can easily get a long or short upper later as you like. I would get long and heavy from the factory and replace with a short, light, threaded TacSol later.

Both the Ruger and Browning are solid options. I hate trying to engage the safety on the Browning but that is minor.

A compensator. It's going to be my competition pistol.

Decide first on grip angle, either the regular mk iv or the 22-45.

I’m a decided mk iv standard fan, and prefer the target barrels. I have a 6 7/8 hunter, a 10”stainless, a threaded 5:5 and a stubby I had cut to 2” and had threaded. When the suppressor is on it, there’s about 1/8” of barrel between the receiver and suppressor

I’ve been on the same quest, nigh impossible unless you’re willing to pay over MSRP by a considerable amount. Of those I’ve perused, the below pictured are the ones that interested me most.

Versions with threaded barrels or the target grips. Volquartsen also offers OEM barrels including a stubbed (3”) and threaded suppressor friendly configuration.

In a MK.IV I would go with a stainless steel target model; either the 5 1/2" bull barrel version or the same thing only threaded for a suppressor.

I have LONG been a big fan of the Ruger do to how nice the after market is. As for someone new? Only they can decide. The MKIV has a lot of different options. Best thing to do is at minimum handle them if you can find them in a shop. Even better of course is if you can rent or use one first. They are all great but some very different. Depends of course on what someone wants to do with it of course.

Ruger. I like the 22/45 variant, the grip angle is more comfortable in my opinion. I have the Mark IV 5.5" bull barrel version. Terrific pistol, very accurate and reliable.

Mrs. McGee and I have Mark IV 22/45s, one Target model (hers) and a Lite (mine). I like the Lite because of the threaded barrel, but hers is definitely more accurate.

I have had great results with my Victory.
My Victory has been flawless.

I agree, go with SS. I like my MKIV Hunter, but be prepared to drop another $150 of aftermarket goodies into a Ruger to get the trigger/action as good as the Victory's.

I have a Mark 1, circa 1972. With it I out-shot many others with expensive imported pistols, at 5+ times the price of my Ruger. Lately I have occasionally been tempted to get a Mark 4, mainly because of its ease of disassembly. But then, logic intrudes and I simply cannot imagine anything being better, aside from the SS option. If I was new to the category I would get the Ruger, because of their reputation, if nothing else.
