Can one do this legally? Is there anyone in Cook County that does this or has done it before? Sometimes ammo prices seem to be better online, and I'm all for saving money. Note: When I say Cook County, IL, I am excluding Aurora and Chicago.

FYI...Aurora isnt in Cook Co, its sits in Kane, DuPage, and Will, but not Cook.

It is legal buy ammo in Cook Co as long as you are legal to buy ammo anywhere else. As far as I know it doesnt matter how you buy it, I know Cabelas will ship ammo to you in Cook Co, they might have an issue w/ Chicago, but its ok anywhere else.

If we translate that to English, I believe it intends to say that legality in suburban Cook is not an issue. That said, some retailers have a policy of simply not dealing with any buyers in Cook...others will ship if they have a copy of your FOID and maybe DL on file.

I've received ammo and components in both Des Plaines and Park Ridge from a half dozen sources.

http://www.ilga.gov/legislation/ilc...tName=Firearm+Owners+Identification+Card+Act.
Chapter 430
65/3
(b-5) Any resident may purchase ammunition
from a person outside of Illinois. Any resident
purchasing ammunition outside the State of
Illinois must provide the seller with a copy of his
or her valid Firearm Owner's Identification Card
and either his or her Illinois driver's license or
Illinois State Identification Card prior to the
shipment of the ammunition. The ammunition
may be shipped only to an address on either of
those 2 documents.

I would suggest that "maybe" on file should be "must have".

"Must have" may be the law but it is not what all vendors require ... I know of at least one that ships w/o even the FOID, just a checkbox that asserts you're over 18, not prohibited, etc.etc.

And I say Good for Them! Seriously, they are saying, "We are in Kentucky, or Wyoming, or wherever - and who the hell is Illinois to impose thier state law upon us - we are not in Illinois!"

What is the State of Illinois going to do, anyway - go to a mail order ammo place in Florida and say, "let me see Joe Schmoe's FOID?" The State of Illinois comes knocking on my door in Washington, I am going to tell them to get the hell off my land!

That pisses me off about California and places that won't ship to California - who the hell is California to tell a dealer in Virginia what they can and can't do. The states' laws should only apply to persons who are physically standing in those states at that particular moment and should not be imposed upon persons outside that state.

... absolutely right, everyone knows it's up to Mayor Bloomberg to regulate Virginia gun sales :barf:

More seriously, I agree with a principled stand. However, I (cynically) suspect that firms shipping w/o adhering to the letter of the law are more likely doing so out of ignorance/laziness than principle. Still beats the hell out of those who simply refuse to deal with entire states' worth of potential customers!

Oops, I just fixed my reply

What's irritating is that the law plainly states mail-order ammo is legal, but many companies still refuse to do it, even after pointing it out to them. Centerfire recently refused to ship me ammo, in spite of me sending them a link to the relevant statute. We have a hard enough time without the retailers joining Daley's side.

Oh and one thing I noticed, say FOID to anyone outside of Illinois and you will usually get a confused look  and a HUH?

The vendors out of state arent asking for an FOID because FOID's dont exist in other states.

Natchez Shooters Supply will not sell ammo on-line or over the phone to Georgia. I can get it from anyone else that I've ordered from out of state. I don't know exactly why and the rep was vague other than to confirm that. Maybe a distributor arrangement???

I've done it

I ordered a case of 1,000 rounds of 9mm from Cabela's online, when it was insanely hard to find. I had no problems with it at all. They just needed a fax of my FOID card.
