How many others buy ammo for guns they don't have or don't have yet and why?

For me I keep a box of .30-30, .22Mag, and .410 shells on hand for testing a rifle I might want. Seems to save time and hassle trying to find ammo after the gun store is closed or on a weekend. Also some of my buddies have these calibers but always seem to forget to by ammo before we go to the range.

Never bought ammo for a gun I don't have, but have traded a gun and still have some ammo for it.

I have a good friend with whom I used to work. When I met him, he had little or no interest in shooting. I let him shoot my M1911 and some other handguns, and pretty quickly he bought an M1911. Then he got to shoot my Lee Enfield, and went crazy buying surplus rifles. He started buying ammunition in anticipation of buying rifles. He once bought a case of 7.7x58mm Japanese in anticipation of buying a Type 99.

Since then he's gotten into long range rifle competition and sold off all of his military ammunition so that he didn't have to drag it around the country with him when he changed jobs.

Anybody who bought up loads of 7.62 NATO for $35.00 a 200 round sleeve and 5.56 Nato for $50.00 a sleeve when it was available was a smart cookie in my book whether he had guns for the calibers or not.

I still have a 1000 round case or two of Chinese steel case .308 that I paid $109.00 for back in the good old days.

I bought 4 cases of Lake City 30 cal. carbine ammo from CMP at Camp Perry two years before I bought a M1 Carbine. I bought the ammo because it was such a great deal but I was not in the marked for a M1 Carbine. I figured one day I'll get around to getting the rifle and I did but it was way down on the list. I just can't pass up a great deal.

I have bought ammo for guns that I did not have at the time but soon had after the ammo purchase. Like right now I do not have a 50-90 sharps yet but I have about 100 rounds of loaded ammo for it just for the brass not somuch for ammo.

Kind of a good question. I haven't bought for guns I don't own, but like the others, I've got left overs in calibers I don't have anymore.

Got to decide what to do with it:rolleyes:

Let's see here... I picked up a fistful of 12ga for free form a neighbor, have no shotgun. I have 50-100 .40's for a pistol I no longer have. that is all I can remember right now.

Im poor enough as it is. I was lucky enough this past year to be able to buy a new pistol with my tax return, but have been so tight this year otherwise ive literally only bought and fired about 300 rounds through about 3 of my pistols. Anything else ive shot has been courtesy of friends with ammo.

I dont need to spend money on ammo that i wont be able to shoot. Not even if i knew for a fact i was getting that caliber gun. Because thats just that much longer i would have to wait to buy that particular firearm.

AFTER i had the firearm, yeah, definately.

Only did it once. Told I needed to get shells for a 16 ga. (about 3 years ago) and it was a 12.
Still have that box of shells.

WaltonS: I just recently saw a thread in the Buy/Sell/Trade: Accessories forum about people who are offering up stuff they dont want anymore for free (plus shipping costs) and anyone can claim it, but then they have to offer up something they dont want anymore for free to someone else, and when you receive your free item, you reimberse the sender the shipping.

You could probably unload your shotgun shells and pick up something you might get a little more use for.

Or you could just buy a 12 GA. :)

No, I must not have been clear enough: I bought 16 gauge shells for a 12. It was a Savage Arms Hiawatha... I was told it took 16 gauge shells, and in all actuality it was chambered for 3" 12 ga. ammo. (and upon looking I must've left that box back home, but hey, that's fine)

I'm deliberately stocking up on calibers for guns I don't yet have, but plan to buy in the future. With the price of ammo only going one way - up - I think it's wise to stock up. The calibers I'm stockpiling are very common calibers:
.38 Special, .45 ACP and .223. I'm set to buy a Bushmaster AR-15 in the next few weeks.

Oh i see. Now that i know, the way you said it made sense. :)

EDIT:

WOW WaltonS, i just noticed your join date to THR was 5 days ago, and you already have about 80 posts! Holy crap!

I've bought reloading dies for a caliber I don't own yet. (.41 Mag) Does that count?

I also pick up .45ACP brass and .40S&W brass, and I don't own guns for either of those yet. I'm almost to "critical mass" on the .45ACP.

i haven't bought ammo for a gun i don't have.

however, i have started collecting brass for guns i don't have, and i don't even have any reloading equipment yet. i just know it's something i want to do in the future when i have more space to set up a workshop.

I bought a single round of .50 BMG a few years back simply because it is impressive and to remind myself to get a Barrett M82A1 when I have the money.

Also, way back when I bought a box of 9x23 by accident. Still don't have a gun that can shoot that.

I sold a gun, then found some extra ammo for it laying around. Does that count? :uhoh:

Closest I have come to buying for what I don't have is stocking up on .30 Carbine after I mailed in my CMP Inland order.

I collected brass for about a year before I got my reloading press.

I do that when the ammo for a gun I'm going to buy was on sale.
I remember 1 bought 3 bricks of 22lr at Big5 when it was still 10$ a brick
Then another 5 bricks at walmart when they had a sale.
I also bought many boxes of wolf 7.62x39 before my SKS. Each box was 50cents cheaper than they are now.
Now I'm anticipating a shotgun in the next year, so I'll buy 16 or .410 if theres a big sale. Then buy a cheap gun for the ammo I bought.
