I’m looking into buying a bunch of bulk ammo for my 9mm and soon to me .223 Ar from ammoman.com. I was wondering if anyone knew what would be the best way to store the ammo? Just in ammo cans, plastic bags in ammo cans, cardboard boxes what works?

What Bill said for long term. Most anything will work (other than underwater/hot attic/car trunk) if you plan on shooting it up within a year or so. Mine is down in the basement in their original boxes/shipping containers.

I store my "bulk" ammo (what I'm not loading/using at the moment) in either a .50 cal ammo tin or a giant shotshell holding box purchased from a dept. store (those holding boxes have plenty of space to spare  ). I usually never have more than 1000 rounds of ammo on hand at any given time (trips to the range are limited, and I have a small ammo budget  ), so this works for me. I'd suggest something along the lines of (IIRC) Preacherman's setup--a closet entirely dedicated to ammo, with .50 cal ammo tins full of each different calibre you have available (an awesome pic, if you haven't seen it).

Im thinking if getting like 5000 rounds or more so it may last me a good while.

hmmm, that'd last me about 6 or 8 months :D
i concur with the above, but i'd add that rubbermaid bins are great, too. if the ammo comes in sealed plastic bags, then leave it be until you use it.

If it arrives sealed in plastic battle packs or bags, just leave the bag sealed and you are in good shape.

If it arrives loose or whatever you can vacumn seal it if you have a vacumn sealer around the house or you can stick it in an ammo can with some desicant.

My opinion on ammo is that if you are keeping it in your house where the temperature swings are not a common occurence then it is not that big a deal if you pack it in ammo cans or not.

Then again part of that opinion came about when I got tired of buying ammo cans for ammo packing.

If you run some searches on ammo you will find posts where people found ammo from their parents when cleaning the house out and they shot it up and basically in most cases if the ammo was in the basement or something it worked ok in most cases.

I've got alot stored in the .303 tins and the .50 cal tins. I try to buy the pre-sealed stuff this way I can just put it someplace cool and not worry.

As long as it's cool and dry there isn't too much to worry about, just make sure it stays dry above all else.
