I'm fairly set on getting a S&W .40 for Concealed carry and occasional OC.

I went to a gun shop nearby and he is selling older all metal versions of this gun with the changeable grips that are used and seem to be in good working order.

His price $625-650 (no tax).

Is this normal price? (Washington; Oregon area).
I have a rifle and have shot many hand guns, but this will be my first handgun I've owned. I wanted a 44 mag, but its just too big for what I want.

Can you guys give me some suggestions on buying for my first time? (btw, I have a CCW now). I have looked at auctionarms.com but I'm worried about buying online dude to the FFL transfer issue, I don't really have any good gun stores nearby that I would trust having the gun shipped too.

tnx

First off, almost all "all metal" handguns have changeable grips. In fact, i can't think of one where the grips can't be swapped out.

second, which model is it? S&W has made several.

third, depending on the condition, it might well be over priced. But without knowing the model of gun, it'll be tough to ascertain. I'm gonna guess it's something like a 4006.

By the way, Check this one out. It can be transferred to your dealer. Just a thought.

Don't pass up the S&W M&P polymer options. For a lot less than $625-650 you should be able to get a NEW compact M&P. You don't mention your location but you might want to take a day trip and visit a Sportsman's Warehouse or Cabela's to see what else is available. You can also try Davidson's to get an idea what specific models might run and see if there is a participating FFL close to you.

For a .40SW that seems a little high for used gun.
I bought my XD .40SW w/ 4" barrel on sale about a year ago for $400.00 NIB. My XD9mm 3" sub was $429.00 NIB with on 10rnd mag and one 16rnd mag.

Portland area recommendations

Keiths sporting goods - East Side
Gunbroker, Tigard area
Sportsman's Warehouse - East side off 205 at Sunnyside exit.

The 4006 looks pretty close to the ones I was looking at, though looks to be in newer condition since the wording on the ones I was looking at was hard to make out.

And on the polymer guns. Man I can't hit the broad side of a barn with one. To me the balance is just way too far off for me. That and the triangle sites it had just was bad (a 9mm beretta if memory serves).

I need a fairly stout gun. I grew up shooting long barrel 44 mags and such large frame revolvers. I'm also 6'1, 210lbs with large hands and long fingers. 8.5 inches from wrist to top finger to be precise :neener:

Looks like their are some more shops nearby to me via that gallery of guns. I'm In vancouver, washington.

S&w 4006

Check with CDNN... they have both new and used (VG-EX) $299-399... It's a great gun... no way in the world should you be payin $600+ for that gun. There are other net-dealers sellin 'em for around that price too, shop around.

Thanks fellas. Its why I delayed purchasing, as I was sorta bewildered as to the price of them. When I can get something brand new all metal polished revolver for only a hundred or two more.

Thanks to the tips in this tread I found another gun shop really close to me, going to check it out this morning to see if they really are there. Never heard or seen them before and they are really close to me.

check it out and write down the model names of the ones that fit your hands the best. make sure you can reach all the controls and such and it feels comfortable, and the size fits your needs. then let us know what you're looking at and we can post some negotiating prices for you. :)

Welcome to The High ROad Helltrix - lots of good knowledge
here - from the subject line I was thinking it was a question about
where to buy a bulk 500 rds bit of ammo to break in a
new handgun.

The S&W 4006 was designed for .40 S&W - one of the first and
a good execuetion of a variation on the general design of
the platform.

There are also some CZ 75B/85 variants in .40 S&W as well in
case you see some displayed try them for size.
THe .40 Compact is fairly new, and has a ambi safety.
THe CZ Kadet .22 LR conversion kit is available as well.

It would be nice if more manufactueres would put a
"Find a Dealer Near YOU" function on their web site.

FYI - I'm a .45 ACP
shooter mainly, 1911 and a big N-frame 625 5" Bbl. .45 ACP
Certainly not an easy CCW but the N-frame 610 shoots
the .40 S&W as well as the 10MM AUto in either a
4" or 6" Bbl. Len. with full moon clips of course.

Perhaps you might want to spend more and step up to a SW1911. I recommend the SW1911PD # 108283 or the discontinued #108286 if you can find one.
Have you tried Bob's Sporting Goods in Longview ? http://www.bobsmerch.com/

Step up to .45 ACP - kinda disregards the O.P.'s pref. as well
as going away from a DA/SA to a SA only so let's change
cartridge and action as well.... sheeish.

Might see if CDNN still has any FN/Browning Hi Powers left in 40S&W? They went for around $429.00 or so, if memory serves me correctly. All steel, brand new, great gun. The price for that S&W 40 series is way too high.

In my opinion the best deal out there on a metal framed pistol is the CZ 40B at CDNN. For $289 you get the "feel" of a colt commander and the internals of a CZ75 plus a few upgrades such as a stainless recoil-rod and a braided recoil spring!!!

shop around go to a range that rents guns and or gun club talk to the people there see what they use and handle them if possible I bought a 6906 once the trigger had a lot of travel after the first shot I could not get comfortable with it There wasn't anything wrong with the gun it was just something didn't suit me I finally found someone who didn't mind and I passed it on for what I had in it haven't pick up a smith & wesson since

HellTrix, that's the full-size M&P40. I have one, and I love it to death. That price on there is a bit steep for the base model, though. You really shouldn't pay more than $450 for that specific gun. Figure $100 more for Trijicon night sights on it. Shop around and find the best price, because the $550 is too much.

I can carry the full-size just fine in winter, but I opted for a compact during summer since the grips so long. The compact M&P's can run around that price range, but even that's a bit high.

Most ranges have an M&P to rent. Try one out before going all-in. A few people have managed to stick with Glocks after shooting an M&P. It is light, however, being a polymer frame, but was designed around the 40, so it handles without the harsh recoil some other guns in 40 have.

+1 for FleroCDSP's comments on the S&W M&P - I have a friend in
Spokane who got one this spring at Sportsman Surplus
for $498.

I'd also add the CZ 40B is a very good value for the money
as well as the steel frame being able to soak up the recoil. I'm not
sure about Bbl. Len. but I think my full size 75B is CDW possible
heck I carry a full size 1911 CCW. or whatever you call it in ORegon
In Wash. state it's a Concealed Pistol License = CPL

The CZ-40B has a 4.4" barrel and is ~ the same size as my SIG P220. Actually I carry the 40B in the P220 holster!

Ok, I settled and bought the .40 M&P S&W. He threw in 100 rounds of JHPs.
Total came to like $570 and some change. I know I got some of you saying its a bit high priced, but in my area this was one of the best deals for a new handgun. With gas prices going anywhere else wouldn't have saved me any money either. Or driving around more to look around, even ordering online, having to do a transfer and shipping. So I think this came out to about the best I could do in my area.

I did get to shoot one at the range and I could actually hit with it.

Gonna christen it this sunday. Only thing that strikes me funny is it basicly has no safety. I loaded up 15 in the mag and slid it in, and the cocked it, the round made it to the chamber but it wasn't very smooth with the full 15. Wonder if this will smooth out or if I should not load 15 into the 15 rnd mag. The booklet thing says I can put 15 in the clip and then chamber a round and add another to the mag for a 15+1. But with no safety I'm not sure I would even want to keep one in the chamber.

Only thing I'm lacking now is a holster, this guy didn't have much for holsters. I think I want a clip type for inside the belt deal as most of my pants hardly fit me anymore (damn diet and exercise is working).

Congrats on your purchase. If you got a good enough
deal for your area and you're ok with it, then that's all that
matters - and you have a dealer to work with just in case.

S&W Warranty and Customer service is great. I had to
send back my 625 with an extraction issue out of the
box. 3 weeks turn around including my adding them doing a
Master Revolver Action Job.

Holsters, perhaps some of the other contributors to this
thread can add some makers/models. I use a Milt Sparks #Axiom
OWB for my 1911. JUst not an IWB Dude I guess.

You might price Wal-Mart .40 S&W FMJ ammo for some
economical range ammo.

I hope to try out an M&P .40 S&W this fall. A friend in
Spokane has one, but he's laid up rehab'ing injuries
from a motorcycle accident from this spring.

Randall

Hellitrix - FYI

S&W M&P - it's safety is built into the
striker fired mechanism similiar to the Glock
design. Racking the slide, partially cocks the
striker, but it is blocked in case of a dropsie,
and is only enabled and fully cocked by pulling
the trigger..
