S&W 4006PC or PPC40
Only about 1,000 each ever made.
Barsto match barrels, hand fitted Briley bushings, hand fitted slide. Novak sights. (Aristocrat on PPC40).
Factory accuracy tested in ransom rest.
I let one get away from me circa 2002. $900.00. They run $3,000+ now.
I do have 2 PPC 9’s, a 5906PC, and a Super9...
Just no .40’s or .45’s...
Arguably the Most accurate .40’s ever made...100% reliable.

This. And I’m surprised no one else has mentioned the Third Gen S&Ws.
I’ll take my 4006, followed closely by my Sig P229.

That's easy- the one I have- an old Gen 2 Glock 23, ex LE gun. I don't really care for the 40, but I obtained this one and I don't really have any $ in it. It gets used as a sidearm when hunting, where the most dangerous critter I may come across is a hog. I especially like it when archery hunting- I could kill a hog or unwelcome coyote with it (or at least scare the thing away) without using a $20 arrow/broadhead. Same thing during black powder season, sparing me the the need to reload that thing. Or turkey hunting- saving me from wasting an expensive long beard round (that wouldn't be ideal for a hog anyway) and suffering the recoil from firing it at something besides a turkey. Not to mention the SD aspect of having a 40 auto in my possession before, during, and after the time sitting in the stand or blind. That 23 also came in handy regarding ammo a time or 2- remember when wally world quit selling pistol ammo? They marked every box of handgun ammo down to $5, regardless of amount in the box, brand, type of round, etc. By the time I got there, all the "good" stuff like 9mm and 45 was gone, but there was lots of 40 and 38 special. I bought all of it. I also found bunch of it a couple years ago at a yard sale for cheap and bought all of it too. Both "opportunities" prior to 2020, of course. Again, not a fan of the round, but if I can make a gun go bang for cheap, I'll use it for that. Other than those uses, that old 23 lives in my outside shed, stashed behind my tool box- just in case. Just because I don't have any special love for the 40, it is still an effective gun that works if I suddenly find myself in need of a handgun.

I have three .40’s, a 1990’s vintage S&W 4013, a trade-in Beretta 96 Centurion DAO and I recently picked up a trade in Gen 2 Glock 22. I haven’t been the biggest user of the .40 despite it being a very good defensive caliber, the .45 and 9mm have pretty much been my mainstays.

If I was to only have one .40, I’d stay with the 4013. :)

Stay safe.

If you could have just one pistol in 40 S&W, which would you choose?

Ruger SR-40C.
That was my one .40S&W pistol, and I love it. It's been my primary CC almost since I bought it 6 years ago.

Browning HP. It's the most accurate of all my semi-autos.
This one will take over being my choice for a .40. I found one yesterday at the gun show, been looking for quite a while for a BHP in .40S&W.

If only one, of what I currently own, it would be the P229R.

I guess I'd just throw away the .40S&W barrels for all my other .40S&W/.357Sig guns.
