I would like to get a C&R license, but will be moving to a different state later this year. I have a few questions about this:

1. I realize when you change your physical addresses, you must notify the BATF and they issue you a new license with the new address. Is there a charge/fee for the updated license?

2. When you move, do you have to notify the police in the area you are moving to that you have a C&R license?

Thanks.

1) No. Just send in the appropriate form. You should have received one in your initial information packet, but if you can't find it, you should be able to get one online or sent to you. The right one is Form 5300.38; keep in mind that this is the same form a 01 FFL would use, so only fill out the parts applicable to your 03 FFL (skip the hours of operation).

2) Yes. Just like with initially obtaining it, it is for informational purposes only. I have included a letter with it stating that, as per ATF regulations, this letter serves as the notification that is required (as well as a copy of the form). If the CLEO writes you back for any reason, well, keep that letter as proof that he/she has been notified, and don't bother with anything else (some think they can get you to spring for a local background check).

Hope that helps. It took about a month for them to get me the new copy of the license when I moved (interestingly, that was double the time it took to get the license originally).

Keep in mind that since you are changing states, it is very likely that your license number will change (there are region codes in them). No big deal, just don't be surprised.

My change of address also took about 1 month, although I didn't change states. Because the form is also used for 01 FFL, I made sure I was clear in the letter to the CLEO that the license was for collecting purposes only, not for any type of firearms business.

Similar add-on question...

I'm moving to an appartment temporarily until I find a house that suits me... do I really need to include a copy of my lease agreement?
