The BATF will send you a book when you get a C&R.

Anything over 50 years old is automatically a C & R also.

Lone beat me to it. Some people think that a gun must be specifically listed to have C&R status but any gun that is 50 years old is automatically considered to be C&R even if not spcifically listed. You just have to be able to confirm the gun's approximate date of manufacture.
