C&R License worth it?

Good Lord! Reminds me of Unintended Consequences...
Maybe I'll hold off on that C&R...
Actually, the C&R could protect you from that somewhat. The C&R (type 03 FFL) licence certifies you as a federally licenced firearms collector. It is issued specifically for the purpose of aquiring and trading of C&R elidgable firearms. Having one along with your properly mantained bound book would help you case in proving that you are a legitimate collector.

The way I read the story above, these guys were unlicenced and selling their arms to other unlicenced individuals at a gunshow. Although it shouldn't matter in a sane world, there is a slight difference between that and trading among other type 03 FFLs. The latter certainly would look better in court.

I'm thinking of getting a:
Yugo SKS (practically all crufflers get this, I suppose)
A Mosin Nagant M44 Carbine
Enfield Jungle Carbine or Enfield MKIII
A .22 LR training rifle

My only word of caution is, you might want to stay away from the Romanian M-1969 trainer if you are looking for a really nice .22 training rifle. I bought one based on the rave reviews I heard on the net and I was not impressed. It is nice and is accurate but because it is so cheap, people go overboard when talking about it's qualities. For a $50 rifle, it is a bargin but it is in no way as nice as most U.S. made trainers or even as nice as most of the comercial .22s that can be had for little cash. It is fairly crude with a poor trigger and basic sights. I am not bashing them, I just want you to know that they may not quite live up to your expectations if you have heard alot of hype about them.

I would say, spend the extra cash and get a Mossberg or a Winchester military trainer. You will never regret the extra money you spent because they are wonderful guns that will only go up in value (esp the Winchester).

A few points:

Any C & R guns bought after acquiring your license, MUST be logged into your bound book, whether or not your license was used to purchase it.

Guns can be sold or traded if done so to further your collection. (Like selling all of your Mosins to concentrate on Mausers.) You cannot sell guns in an effort to make a living. (Which sounds to me what the people in the above news article were doing.)

Don't take chances with the bound book. Brownells sells one for about $4 that is BATF approved. The use of a computer based spreadsheet requires written approval from the BATF.

The BATF can inspect your collection and books, BUT they must call to arrange for the inspection. It's your choice whether or not to allow them into your house or take your collection to their offices.

Go here: http://www.atf.gov/firearms/faq/faq2.htm#g for a pretty thorough FAQ from the BATF. The 'Colletors' section is about 1/3 of the way down the page, but there are other areas that also apply like the 'Bound Book' one.

And IMO, I'd say go for it. There are alot of very accurate milsurps out there like the K-31 and M-39 that will hold there own with any modern target rifle. Most of the surplus ammo is dirt cheap. And you'll pay for the license the first time you don't have to pay the dealer transfer fee.

C&R

I've been thinking about it for some time now. Let me get this straight. The only weapons that are required to be in the book are C & R. Not your modern stuff? I've been reading about this subject and on different forums I get different answers. I have however, downloaded the appropiate forms and am trying to weigh the pros and cons. Any more thoughts?
Thanks,

Yes, its worth it. In FFL fee and govt. thuggery tax alone. Even if you only buy one rifle the entire 3 years.

Only C&R's have to be put in the book. And it doesnt matter if you acquired them with your license, or bought a M1 from the CMP, or your buddy's Yugo SKS out of the back of his truck. All C&R's go in the book.

Well, smeg. I just found out you have to be 21 to apply for a C&R license. Of course, I'm 19 and my birthday's July 22nd...

Thanks for all the help, though. Man, I feel stupid  .

Wait until you are 20. It sucks.

I turn 21 on July 17. I'm gonna get drunk, apply for my C&R and my CCW while drunk, then go buy 3 pistols, while still drunk!!!! Yeeehaaaawww!!!

For those without sarcasm detectors, the above is in no way representative of my plans on my upcoming birthday, as doing anything but conversing and hitting on women while drunk is plain stupid, and asking for trouble. Also, it is a poor representation of firearm-owners. So once again, it was a joke. Live with it.
