I am in the process of filling out my CCW for Bakersfield, CA--Kern County. Can anyone help me word the "essay" i need to include stating my need for a CCW? I go to work at 3am and have been nearly attacked in the parking lot by the drunken homeless twice now. i made the mistake of not filing a police report so i dont have any legal documentation to include. please offer any assistance possible.

Kern County is very good on CCW. Not perfect. There have been incidents of Bakersfield residents being discriminated against by the sheriff although I seem to recall that situation getting better at some point.

First step, get in touch with a local NRA Member's Council chapter:

http://nramemberscouncils.com/mc/directory/ - clicky the linkie.

You've got one right in Bakersfield, ask them for local intel.

Another source for local intel: go to the sheriff's office, get their list of approved CCW trainers. The trainers will usually know the local CCW scene cold.

Odds are you want to deal with that sheriff rather than Bakersfield PD.

I'm in Bakersfield. I had a pretty good "good cause statement" that was specific to me, but I have to tell you that I know a lot of people here who had pretty slim statements and still got their permit. Go to Second Amendment Sports off Rosedal Hwy and talk to them. They will help you thru this and even provide the training.

Way out in the desert I've heard folks use "looking out
for rattlesnakes while rock hunting". Maybe use something
along the same lines. It might look better on paper if the
reason were more for protection while pursuing
your "hobby/additional income". You know collecting
rocks to polish up for the swap meet, sometimes one
can't be too careful while out in the boonies.....;)

Not living there, but how about doing a freedom score sheet that shows that california politicians are much closer in ideology to Fidel Castro than George Washington. Then ask them, as their last act, to grant your CCW before moving to Havana.

Probably a good reason I don't live in california. I wish I could keep the socialist variety of californians from contaminating Colorado, a 10X more free state. Not perfect, but not california (except boulder and denver). And to think my company wants me to move there. They must wonder about the look I give them (the what have you been smoking look) when they ask again.
