For practical purposes, just about all forged lowers of any make/model are essentially the same and will form an accurate, reliable rifle - since the upper does 90+% of the work on an AR. There are tons of 'off-list' receivers out there. Some have different fit/finish and so you may want to find a lower that matches the upper you purchase.
However, I would suggest avoiding lowers from Vulcan/Hesse/Blackthorne due to numerous reported QC issues. For a first AR I'd also avoid the specialty Bushmaster Carbon 15 lower as well. Also, if you have any intention of purchasing a Rock River Arms upper, I'd think twice about buying an RRA LAR15 lower - while that lower is 'off-list', certain complete RRA rifles are banned on the Kasler list and you don't want to walk into that situation.
