I seem to recall seeing a picture of an item that replaced the pistol grip with a tiny hooklike thing to grasp. Would an AR with such an item be legal in CA?
Robinson Armaments sells a model of their M96 that is California legal. Basically it has no pistol grip handle. And performs like their regular M96's.
Perhaps the "hook like" thing you are refering to is the easy carry strap, er I mean "Tactical Frontal Finger Rest Stud" , built into the bottom of the pistol grip-less M96?
Ha, some other state than California, and it would have a pistol grip on it.
Seriously though Robinson Arms has a photo on their website, showing that it can be held and fired. I still wouldn't do it though. I would look for alternate vendors. Robarm is a little too expensive for a gun that could get snatched by State Stormtroopers.
No what you guys in Cali need next is some sort of Monte Carlo lower for the AR. Although I don't think that will help much in the since it seems like AR's are banned outright. Granted I didn't wade through the handy 96 page guide on the subject though. Maybe if they do away with the California ban on "assault weapons", and I live there, I would look at some sort of Monte Carlo design built into an AR lower.
If I read right you can have a weapon that takes more than ten rounds with a detachable mag if there is no pistol grip. Like an M1A or M14 right?
The entire AR series is banned. The legislation says that you can have an AR with out a pistol grip, bayo lug, flash suppressor, and folding stock. However, for some far out reason the Attourney General was allowed to add any guns he deemed necessary to the ban at his discretion. So he banned all AR and AK series guns. Period. At this time you cannot import into this state a detachable magazine AR for any reason. Forget about it.
Yes you can get a FAB-10. Go to these links for my FAB-10 experience.
I like the FAB-10. It is a neat little gun. I have taken the 20" model out squirrel shooting and it does great. The receiver costs $219 from FAB-10. Once my FFL was done with taxes and other fees it cost me $323. Yes much more expensive than a regular AR lower, but what could I do about that?
The procedure for clearing the chamber and leaving 9 rounds in the magazine is pretty easy to do. You just pop the rear pin, make the upper verticle. Place the right hand around the upper right at the ejection port. With the left hand you pull the bolt carrier back and the round comes out into your right hand. Push the bolt carrier back into the gun, place the round back in the magazine, close the gun and re-pin. This is for those of you who go shooting on private land and you like to have your magazines loaded so you can put a round in quick and shoot a coyote if you want to. Do so at your own risk as transporting loaded firearms in your vehicle is illegal.
I like my little Commando Carbine upper too. It looks much better with the fake 30 round magazine on it. Check the Fake Magazine Project link because I am going to make an update there on my conversation with the FAB-10 people about altering your receiver.
