10mm<--40S&W

This is WRONG!

Rimless cases headspace with the front of the case. Putting .40 S&W into a 10mm results in incorrect headspacing and is DANGEROUS!

DO NOT DO THIS!

take a look at the message at the bottom, "this is of course most appicable to revolvers and single shots like the TC Encore/contender etc"

I never meant to suggest that you could shoot a 40 in a 10mm autoloader.

I also don't mean that you can shoot a 38 short colt in a 357 desert eagle

or a 44 special in a 44 mag desert eagle, LAR grizzly or Coonan, or whoever else makes a semiauto in 44 and/or 357

Okay, so I could have worded my response differently as well....sorry.

I just had a go-round with someone else who INSISTS that it's fine to fire .40 S&W in a 10mm semi-auto so the instant I saw that list my eyes bugged out 'cause I'm wondering how many times people are going to get confused about that (and how many folks are going to get hurt).

Sine the subject of compatable ammo in autoloaders has come up, it is my understanding that the Astra 400, chambered in 9mm Largo, can also chamber, fire, and extract normally, 9mm Luger and .380 acp ammo. I havent tried it, as I dont own one, and I have seen it mentioned that it may not be the wisest practice except in emergencies, but I'm told it can be done, and the gun will operate normally. I think that's the only autoloader I've ever heard of that will accept more than one type of cartride AND function properly still.

I don't think this is true for the T/C barrels. The auto pistol cartridges in a T/C still headspace on the case wall, just like in an auto pistol. Case in point, you CANNOT safely fire a 45 ACP in a T/C Contender chambered for 45 Win Mag. With star clips, if a 45 Win Mag revolver existed (do they?), one likely could do this.

While there are several rimmed cartridges that will interchange safely...it's because the longer rounds have a "parent" cartridge that spawned evolution of the base caliber. .38 Special and .357 magnum. .44 Special and .44 magnum. .45 Colt and .454 Casull. These are a few examples. Aside from the true interchangeable rounds...it's best not to try it with others.

The .40 and the 10mm can be fired from moon clips in a revolver, since the clips esentially transform the rimless cases to "rimmed" and the pressures will run lower because of the added bullet jump. It's not what you'd want to do except in an emergency, though.

To be on the safe side...other than with the known exceptions that have parent cartridges...it's best to stick with what the weapon is chambered for.

And people wonder why some of the gun manufacturers are becoming lawyerly.
