I am thinking about getting a rifle chambered in .458 win mag. for hunting some large deers and also bear defense.

It's really between that and the 30-06.

Does anyone have any experience with the .458 win mag because I have never shot one before is it similar to the 30-06 in terms of recoil?

Thanks

Not An Expert

I would not be an expert on this, but judging from the remarks of folks here whom I respect a great deal . . .

I think you'll find that .30-06 will take care of just about anything North America has to offer.

It has the range, the punch, and is one of the most widely supported cartridges out there.

I would imagine that the .458 would have something more to offer, but one of the "something mores" would be cost.

I'm thinking that, unless your "large deers" are bigger than elk and moose, the .30-06 will be plenty.

As far as bears go, if you're talking about black bear, brown bear, or grizzly bear, the .30-06 should be fine. If you're hanging out in Alaska with the Kodiaks, then the picture might change but, even so, .30-06 would do that job.

Where are you expecting to hunt these large deer?

I've fired a 458 and a few other "big bores". Unless you live int Alaska or some place like that the 3006 will do any thing you want. It will be a lot cheaper to feed also.

Ever shot a .458 Win-Mag?
Or a 30-06, for that matter?

Most folks will shoot a .458 one time, and quickly hand you back your rifle because they suddenly remembered they need to be somewhere else, doing something different.

I really think a 458 magnum is a bit much for any American deer or black bear. I've used a .308 for every large North American game animal except Brown Bear (Griz) and Mountain Goat. The 30-06 has been used for every large North American game animal. It's not the caliber so much as is the shot placement. Remember Bell used a .270 to cull elephants , head shots of course. One important thing to remember, can you afford to practice with a .458 enough to become proficient Check out the price of a box of .458, Wow.:)

.458 win mag garand!!!

just kidding, .458 would be rediculously overkill for deer. If I am interpreting the question correctly. .30-06 would be a much more sensible and economical choice IMHO

This is from Chuck Hawks site, as you can see the .458 is running more than 3times the recoil, and and the recoil velocity is almost double.

Cartridge (Wb@MV) Rifle Weight Recoil energy Recoil velocity

.30-06 Spfd. (180 at 2700) 8.0 20.3 12.8
.458 Win. Mag. (500 at 2100) 9.0 62.3 21.1

So the .458 hits you 3 times as hard and twice as fast. I shoot and hunt with a .458 regularly, if you do not have good form with it you'll get a good old fashioned a** whuppin put on you in a hurry. For regular shooting I have a light 400 gr. load running about 2200 FPS, and it still gets your attention.

Unless you shoot a lot I would highly recommend a 30-06, with a good 180 gr. bullet their is nothing in North America you can't hunt. Alternatively if ranges are going to be under 150 yards then the good old 45-70 in a lever action would be good bear medicine.

.45-70 (300 at 1800) 7.0 23.9 14.8
.45-70 (405 at 1330) 7.5 18.7 12.7

I shoot a 300 gr. bullet at 2100 FPS in my Browning High Wall, it's a good round under 150 yards and doesn't beat you up too much.

And there is nothing wrong with deer hunting with a .458 Winnie, we have a group of 10 guys going out next week for deer and pigs. The smallest our group can use is a .375 H&H, and there will be at least one or two in the .585 Nyati range.

Are your "large" deer in the 3,000lb range? if not then .308 or 30/06 will stop anything you might run into in North America, the .308 if ranges are generally under 300 yards the 06 if your looking at shots further out (the .308 will work fine further out but the 06 will do it better) a .458 would be a good way to destroy most of the meat from the deer you might hit.....

The 8 mm mauser has been used for decades around the world to take most game animals and its ballistically a 30/06 with a slightly fatter bullet ....

Now if your looking for an excuse to justify a .458 purchase then thats an entirely different matter in which case anyone will tell you that its the only thing suitable to stop a charging North American cottontail rabbit :)

Use the 30.06 The 458 is for very large animals in another country.

If you hunt from an elevated stand, the .458 will require you to be very stable (don't lean much) or else it will kick you out of the tree.

Kinda reminds me of that .577 Tyrannosaur video that pops up regularly.:D

The .30-06 used to work on most Northa American game, especially deer. But now that deer have Kevlar fur, .30-06 is just not enough gun. You need a 500Remchester Super-Duper-Short-Long-Belted-Or-Not-Magnum.

Seriously though, a even a .25-06 will work well on large deer. How large are we talking, 300 lbs? Even if we're talking corn fed Iowa bucks, all of the old school cartridges are plenty. .270, .308, .30-06, etc. I seem to recall a fella that swore by 130 grains worth of .270 for elk.

Oh, and if we're talking ranges of 250 or less, the 'flat shooting' thingy is a joke IMO. At those ranges, the difference in drop is negligible for all intents and purposes.

I grew up in Colorado and I and my family have hunted there, in Utah, Idaho, Montana, Canada and Washington most of the large game available.

Unless they have introduced Cape Buffalo along the Madison, I think .458 would certainly do the job...

When weeding a Flower Garden, a D9 Caterpillar will also do that job... Doesn't mean you need it or should use it.

I've hunted Mule and White Tail primarily with .270, although I have also used 30-06 for the task. I believe 30.06 will take any hooved animal in the Americas. My personal preference is .264 Winmag. I find this quite sufficient for Deer, Elk, Bear and anything else I have come across.

My brother is a big believer in the .300 Winmag. That is a handy round, too.

A .458 is going to make you flinch and when you start flinching you're not going to be a good shot and it's going to make your shoulder/neck/head/teeth hurt. Not many folks can handle that much recoil, myself included. Even the .45-70 in the mid to hot range kicks like a mule. I think the .30-06 with 180 gr. will do just fine as will many other ctgs.

Have you priced .458 ammo?

Just buy a .30-30 for ..."deers" This really sounds like a joke, but I'll take it as serious. I could handload that .458 down to .45-70 levels and make a deer rifle out of it, but, why? Ain't no effalents in Texas.

Anyway, might as well get a .460 Weatherby, no more expensive to shoot, I'll guess. Then, if you line 'em up just right, you can shoot through a whole herd of deers.

30-06!!!!! the .458 is way to much! gun /recoil / expense/ weight . the -06 has way moe range, more than adequet knock down power, you can find ammo ANYWHERE, if you want more knock down power @ moderate range (for bear), simply go to a heavier bullet . the .458 is going to limit you in range, cost, availability of ammo, etc. the .458 was created for african dangerous game, where you MUST kill. or be killed at close ranges! i own a 45-70, and believe me, there is more than enough recoil from that with a hot 400 grain load. the .458 win mag is going to be a handfull to shoot. it may even instill a flinch from shooting it. you definately do not want that. you can't kill what you can't hit, and if you flinch every time you shoot it, you will have to be at very close range to hit anything. when i first shot my dad's .300 h&h magnum, @ 12 years old, i had to quit shooting for a couple of days because the recoil / report scared me into flinching. when i got my own 300 win mag, many years later, those thoughts came back. fortunatly, i had reloading equipment, and i downloaded ammoo to 30-06 levels for a while to get used to it, then gradually stepped up to full mag performance. now, there is no problem. now i would like to shoot some real monster guns, not own them, but shoot them. 50 bmg, 460 weatherby mag. 700 nitro express. etc. i kind of get off on abuse nowadays. weird, maybe, but there is no sence denying who you are!

Unless you are going to Africa a 30-06 will dispatch anything you will come up against.

BTW, jumping from a 30-06 all the way up to a .458 Winchester is some big leap. There are so many calibers between the two. If you think a 30-06 is too light (which it isn't) why not consider a 300 Win Mag, 300 Rem Ultra Mag or a 338 Win Mag instead of jumping right to a .458 Winchester?
