caliber for hunting large deers

Back in the 60's I paid $99 for a Mossberg 800 sporter in .243, put a Weaver K6 on it, and it would shoot 3/4" at 100yds. all week long and tighter on Sundays. No bipod though.

338 win mag.. With a good thick coat on the recoil is like a .243. But I am 6'2 200 lbs.

I have yet to see a recoil formula, derivation or even logical argument that the shooter's size or weight had any bearing on.

Perhaps the OP knows the best caliber for practical jokers?
