One of these SHTF posts got me thinking after talking with a few friends about potentcy of pistol cartridges for distance. :uhoh: I know that in a longslide 1911 the 10mm is good out to 100yrds. I wondered if anyone has any info on performance PAST 25yrds for the three above mentioned cartridges. Primarily I'm considering the full size Glocks as they are the only production 10mm I'm aware of in a major brand.

If anyone is aware of info regarding other makers of 10mm that would be great but I don't need to hear Glocks suck (not my favorite, thats sigs, but I can shoot them well) or that Glocks are great. Cartridge help please?

hmmm... i don't know what use a pistol round is going to be for SHTF at those ranges.
anything much beyond 30 yds that needs to be engaged will be getting some .223. i KNOW that works well out to at least 150+ yds (the max i could ever forsee needing it, at least).
i just don't think pistol accuracy that far out is reasonable... but who knows, maybe i need to work on my aim/accuracy.

From personal experience:

357 SIG at 75 yards is basically the same as 25 yards.

10mm out of the G20 with some nice hot loads is pretty close.

45 ACP takes a bit of hold over and waiting.

I have never shot at a person, but a man sized target does not want me shooting at it at 100 yards. The .45 ACP still has plenty of energy to kill at that distance also. Yardage limits just slay me.:)

Adjustment

Just FYI so no one feels the need to tell me to get a rifle. I believe Clint Smith said it right when he said (paraphrased heavily) Use what you have, I use my pistol to fight to my rifle.

My idea was selecting a cartridge that was very usable out past twenty five yards so that I can use my pistol UNTIL I GET TO MY RIFLE:evil: Then they can run but you know what happens....

Just FYI my rifle companion is/was going to be a Ruger Mini 14 Ranch until I get my Sig556. It's taking FOREVER to get here...:banghead:

True......but the 10mm has the same killing power at 100m than the 45 had at the muzzle.

Back on the subject

There are a number of fine 10MM pistols and a few revolvers; I'll stick to pistols, my favorite is the Witness full size all steel, sixteen rounds of 700+ ft lbs of energy and flat shooting to your hundred yards estimate. I agree fully that a pistol is to fight your way to a rifle with but sometimes the rifle is more than a few steps away. Assuming bg is not an expert marksman, you stand a better chance of hitting him at a hundred yards with a good 10mm pistol than you do running for your rifle while spraying rounds back over your shoulder. Aimed fire, even suppressive aimed fire from a 10mm at a hundred yards is quite doable. The Springfield Armory has 10mm pistols as well as Witness, and there are still some S&W 10mm pistols around also. The 10 is probably the most practical self defense round in the world for both two and four legged bad guys. Magazine capacity and muzzle energy added together in a sixteen or seventeen round 10mm is in excess of any hand cannon I know of including the .500s (17*700=11,900 ft lbs).:neener:

Almost any gun can shoot 100 yards or more. GunsAndAmmo article showed out to 200 yards, with off the shelf pistols.(well except the Les Bear)
But at 200yrds with a Glock and Walther in .40cal. Varying degrees of accuracy of course. They were shoot from the prone postion.

The Les Bear of course out did both all the way out to the 200 yard mark.
In the $2000 dollar mark, I'd excpect it to cook breakfast and pick the kids up from school. Also it better talk like the KnightRider car.

+1 to the .357 revolver and .357 levergun combo.

Price out the levergun and the revolver - smart shopping can get you both for the same budget as 1 quality new semiauto, accuracy to 100 yards or better, and a nice foundation to start the gun collecting habit.

then get the other calibers when budget allows for fun :)

Also consider EAA for 10mm, their witness line has recieved some good reviews from the CZ community.

10 mm

I think the Witness line is usually the favorite for 10 mm fans. Dan Wesson is also an option. I really depends on what you like but for me if I were shooting a 10 mm, I would like it to have some weight behind it, which would be the only downside to the Glock. I would also guess the .357sig would be flatter shooting than the .45ACP. Concerning ballistics, I believe the 10 mm is the winner of the three, that would include recoil as well.
Good Luck and Be Safe!

Very hard to argue with that!!!........ I have a Witness Silver Team and they don't want me shootin' at them with that either, or my Witness Elite Match, Sweet Guns, but I still like my 1911 .45.:)

Any pistol caliber of 9MM or better can be effective at 100 yards and can get you to your rifle. I already have my Mini 14.:neener:
