Hello all,

I just heard that the Governor's office is asking the public's opinion on our ferret amnesty bill. I absolutely urge you all to call in your support for this bill as soon as possible. Follow the prompts and select the one that asks for you opinion on legislation. I just called but I want you all to listen carefully in case it changes. To respond to legislation, press #2, then listen for SB 89, press #3, then to support SB 89 press #1. Please have all of your friends and family call in. This is, I believe good news but we must answer this loud and clear!

The Governor's number is: 916 445-2841

Don't let this unique opportunity to be heard by the Governor's Office go by!

Some folks from out of state have asked if they should call, and I don't see what's wrong with that. If you plan to move or visit CA this will affect you too someday. But, we absolutely MUST have Californians call so if you live in CA, or have friends and/or family in California, please have them call as soon as possible!

If you have a web site please post this information. If you have an e-mail list, please forward this information. We need as much exposure as we can get!

OK, now here's what's important beyond just skinnykitties:

Call 916-445-2841 and hit option 2 to comment on legislation. You get a list of seven (and ONLY seven) bills that Arnold is taking comments on right now - you can pick them by numbers:

1) AB1687 - gay marriage thing

2) AB1160 - licences for illegal immigrants

3) SB89 - ferret legalization

4) SB2208 - health/ins. for domestic partners

5) SB740 mobile home rent control or something?

6/7) SB1792 / SB1793 more "gay stuff".

Once you hit each number, a two-option menu asks for your for/against vote.

What's missing here, folks?

Right. Gun control.

I *think* that's a good thing. With the media against us, "public opinion" is brutally stacked, which means he's apparantly doing "policy decisions" rather than "snoutcounting" on gun issues.

But still...it's rather interesting what he IS "snoutcounting" on, isn't it?

In any case...PLEASE call on the ferret bill :D. Seriously. I've been without houseweasels since '97 and I can't have any unless they're legal in my current situation...:(
 
Honestly, I don't think we want a phone poll for 2A rights. CA is chock-full of wildy liberal groups who would go out of their way to clog the system with "Ban all guns!" votes. And as apathetic as the average CA gun owner is, we wouldn't be able to mount much of a response. Ahhnuld would be even more likely than he is now to torpedo 2A.

Another way to look at it:

What do all seven of those bills have in common?

A: none of 'em really matter.

Oh, they're *important* to small segments of the population, but none of them are "core issues".

Hell, there's just ONE "core issue", really, it's called "the economy". Compared to that, almost everything else is really just "political sideshows", even gun issues.

The most important aspect of the economy is the state budget, followed by energy supplies (read: WE DON'T HAVE THE NEW POWER PLANTS YET!!!), followed by worker's comp and similar "business health" issues.

I'm starting to think that if Arnold sees this year's gun control bills as "partisan distractions" from what REALLY matters, and publicly says so, he'll have the political ammo needed to veto more or less ALL of it, 'cept maybe A2431-Steinberg, the bill to clarify gun returns from custody.

Ferrets aren't rodents.

They're carnivores, same as dogs, cats, bears, etc.

As to P-Dogs: no, they're illegal in Calif too.
 
Ferrets rock, I don't know where this irrational fear comes from that somehow ferrets will break loose and form breeding colonies in the wild :confused: :confused:

If they would take the time to research it, they would find it improbable, if not imposible at best.
 
Are ferrets related to minks and sables? They make nice coats and wonderful liners for outrageously expensive leather boots.

I wonder if you called them polish cats would they still be illegal??........lol
 
Yes, they're related to mink and sable, but their coats aren't as nice. Well...they sorta are. Basically, Mustelids have two layers of fur, outer "stiffer" fur and shorter "very fluffy" fur. The INNER fur of a ferret is as good as mink/sable/sea otter/etc but the outer fur is closer to a dog's :).

There used to be a SMALL market for ferret fur :barf: but it's basically long gone. Thank the diety of your choice. Ferret fur is called "Fitch" for some reason.

The main historical reason for having ferrets was first for rabbit hunting, and also for ratting. In some parts of Europe there are still professional vermin eliminators who clear rats out of barns via a combination of ferrets and terrier dogs. The ferts and doggies are raised and kept together and are all buddies...the ferrets flush the rats out to the waiting dogs.

During the wooden sailing ship era, a combination of cats and ferrets were kept on board for the same reason. Yet again, when raised together cats and ferrets get along just fine and they'd tag-team the rats.

If an adult ferret meets a cat or kitten (even if he's never seen one before) he'll generally try and make friends with it. Ditto dogs, rabbits, sometimes even rats and mice. CATS on the other hand...

One of the single funniest things I've ever seen in my life was when I brought Felix the albino ferret over to a friend's house - who had a cat. Felix had been raised by a cat he played with daily. So this new cat is laying on the rug asleep in the sun, on it's side. I very quietly put Felix down and he eagerly trots over to meet this new friend.

Now, Felix weighed less than 2lbs. This cat was a big one, up around 10.

Felix walks over to the top of the cat's head and starts licking it. He knew where a cat likes to be skritched, and was trying to make friends. Sure enough, the cat yawns, stretches, smiles, clearly enjoying the attention, and then he slowly rolls over and opens his eyes to see what's up.

And promptly levitates about 2ft off the ground, lands on all fours facing Felix with a look of utter shock :D.

Felix does this little "happy dance", boinging around at the cat's feet trying to entice it into play.

The cat leaves the room like he's been shot out of a cannon :D.

Felix goes dead still watching it run off, and then..."collapses", basically goes flat on the rug from tail to muzzle, and lets out a little sigh. His reaction to prejudice was the same as anybody else's. I had to pick him up and cuddle him for a bit, but he was quiet for a good hour, lookin' kinda depressed :(.

Then we get back home, he runs full tilt at HIS cat and gleefully jumps all over him :).
 
Yup, ferrets are illegal in California. So we call 'em "skinnykitties" or "carpet sharks" or "Madagaskan Long Squirrels" or whatever down at the vet :).
