I may be going to california next month to visit a friend and was wondering if it would be legal to take my colt 1911 with me? I'am not asking about concealed carry or vehicle transport, but while on the subject how could I transport it to and from a range there to shoot it I wanted to do so?. I just want to know that since I'am over 21 and a non felon allowed to have a gun under federal law, does this mean its ok to keep the gun in my friend's house? Shes a california resident so would she get into trouble for me having my gun in her house? Do residents of california need a permit just to pocess a handgun? thanks.

if you were moving here, you'd need to go through this process.

Since you're just visiting, I dont know how it works.

People can have guns in there houses here though :)

When transporting a pistol, it needs to be unloaded and in a locked case/container. The trunk actually counts as a locked container. To be on the safe side, store your ammo and magazines seperate from the pistol... in a range bag or something.

If you have a CCW from another state, it is NOT valid here.

Pretty much.

Don't bring in any mags bigger than 10rd. You CAN bring in guns not on the "approved for sale" list so long as they don't qualify as "assault weapons" under CA law.

Loaded magazines

Please note: California tends to consider a loaded magazine a loaded firearm EVEN if the magazine is locked in a different container than the actual firearm.

So, keep your magazines unloaded during travel, also. Once you are at/in your lady friend's house you can load up and carry on her property. Of course, if a nosy neighbor sees you they may make a "man with a gun" call even though you would be technically legal.
