Ok, Im sure you've all seen the monstrosity that is a California legal FAL. The ones with the non detachable mag that takes stripper clips of .308. Well Anyway, I was wondering if they are also NJ legal? The law states that FAL's are illegal. It also says AK's are illegal, but I know several dealers that sell Romak's that only accept 10 rd magazines. So does any NJ gun owner have one? Or have you heard about anyone owning them?

Other options are expensive. m1a, m1a socom, or the HK91 special match rifle for 2000 bucks. I thought they were illegal, but the HK91 had a big sign attached to it explaining why it was legal. So anyway, to end my drawn out post, any help would be appreciated.

I don't have much idea of NJ's laws.

But just FYI, not all FALs in Calif. can be modified to be 'CaliFALs'. In particular, the specifically named FN FALs that were banned by the 1989 Roberti-Roos Assault Weapons Control Act ("AWCA '89") are banned (unless registered by 1/1991) and are assault weapons even at the receiver level.
These 'named' guns are called Type I assault weapons.

In contrast, even today an Imbel, DSA or Coonan, etc. FAL-type receiver can be bought and possessed. It just can't be built up into a full FAL-style rifle with all the 'evil features'; these 'by evil feature' guns not banned by name are called Type III assault weapons. (Type II AWs in CA are all AR15 and AK "series" weapons.)

So the options to possess FAL clones (but not true as-marked FN-FALs) are to possess it without a pistol grip (unrealistic, unless you never wanna shoot it in Calif.) or to put a fixed mag catch and 10rd magazine in.

I've looked at and considered purchasing the CA-legal AR, the FAB-10.

I decided against it because the FAB and CA-legal FAL are really nothing more than cool-looking range toys.

They have no practical value whatsoever. I mean really; if TSHTF would you honestly grab one of those things?

Me neither.

If you want a real battle rifle, get one. You said the M1A is legal in your state.

I suggest you get one. It is a real, time and combat proven war rifle and is (from what everyone says) tons of fun at the range.

So you have a sweet range toy AND a real SHTF battle rifle all in one package.

Get the M1A.

:)

One more thing: You can find deals on lightly used M1A's for as little as $1000.00
