At the gunshow this weekend. Ol' boy has a huge monster bull barrel rifle set out there, along with a loaded round (minus the primer) sitting on the table beside it. Built on a Win 70 action. Ol' boy was busy helping actual customers so I didn't want to bother him with simple curiosity questions.

So anyhow, the barrel was marked "6mm-.284-.270"

Now the "6mm-.284" part makes perfect sense because that's exactly what the round looked like - a .284 win or 6.5-284 case with a very long (107 gr?) 6mm bullet in it. Think big brother of .22-243 Middlestead proportions. The weird part is the extra ".270" on the end of the cartridge designation. I can't figure out what this round has to do with the .270. Hmmpf.

Well, if i am thinking right, 284 brass, 270, and 30.06 is all the same right?
now then, the round he is shooting is the 6 , and it is allready called the 6 or 6.5-284. But from what I remember, it actually takes an extra step or two, to downsize the 30.06 brass, to get it right. Whereas the 270 brass, is an easier step. So maybe it is just an hommage to the 270 case being used.

That's a 6-284, with a .270" neck. Very hot round with a reputation for burning barrels.

Most factory chambers for 6mm and 243 calibers have a .276" neck. The .270" neck allowed the user to neck turn the cases down to about 0.012" for consistency & accuracy.
When a barrel has a chamber with a tight neck (smaller than minimum), the gunsmith had darn well better mark the barrel as such - hence the "270".

284 brass is NOT the same as .270 or 30-06. The 284 is one of the few calibers with a rebated rim. Brass availability is sometimes difficult.

Thanks to Steve of StevesPages.com for the images.

Yes, it is actually a recognized wildcat cartridge, but I can't tell you much more than that. It is listed in the Spencer catalog as a chambering for their custom barrels.

Maybe call Spencer and ask some nice person to tell you more about it in addition to the info LB7 offers above. Maybe someone at Spencer is a gun nut like you and me, and would love to talk to you on the phone.

LB7_driver, for some reason your images are not opening up. Maybe you can check into it.

Yea, I noticed that when I got to work. They work from home. Weird....

Links added to individual images, and to the main drawing page.

Weirder still.... the direct links do not work. They do work if I copy & paste, though!

Actually Nosler and Norma offer ammo for it, and Norma sponsored it with CIP, so it isn`t really a wildcat anymore.
The tight neck though is a non-std chamber so I guess it still would be classified as a `cat.
