The manual says to dryfire in a safe direction after reassembly. The website says to avoid dry firing. Everyone says to avoid dryfiring a rimfire.

Is it safe to dryfire a Beretta Neos? Should I just store it cocked and locked, should I store it with a snapcap or should I just dryfire it.

It's not good on the firing pin or chamber face to dry fire any rimfire. The firing pin will impact the chamber face and either stress/break the firing pin and leave pock-marks on the chamber face at the same time.

I keep a fired hull handy to dry fire on after reassembly before storing.

Never dryfire ANY rimfire firearm. So in this case, no, don't dryfire. :)

Usually if the rimfire has a hammer, just lower the hammer manually by hand (of course check to see chamber is empty).

If not, you can either store the firearm in slidelock or using a snapcap.

I was looking at guns for an auction last week, and there was a really nice 17hmr rifle. I had heard that you should never dry fire a rimfire of any kind.
I was interested in the rifle, so i checked it out. Upon inspection of the rifle, I discovered that the bold was broken (two large chunks broken out) close to the firing pin. It was pretty bad.
Now I know why everyone says - DO NOT DRY FIRE A RIMFIRE

Firing pin travel

I am not an expert by any means, but I can and did inspect my Neos carefully. The firing pin has a stop built into the slide. The firing pin will not strike the barrel when dry fired. I have dry fired it many times and inspected the firing pin and barrel under a jewelers loupe. There are no indications whatsoever of wear on either. The firing pin rod WILL strike the back of the slide every time though. Whether that will cause any damage over time could be another discussion.

i keep a snap cap in my cleaning kit to use with my Neos. I wouldnt dry fire it, the caps cost like $5 a pack and give you come peace of mind.
