I obtained some Speer #4495 50 Cal. 325 Gr HP (.500 dia) bullets designed for the .50AE. Can I load these up into some S&W 500 brass?

Will the lack of a cannelure give me problems or can I roll crimp them anyway?

I was thinking of trying a few - while checking the C.O.A.L. of the remaining cartridges in the cylinder between shots for setback. What do you all think?

Bullet jump..

...might occur but why not give it a try???:D Then you'll have an experience to report back.;)

Have a g'day,

Bob.

I've been shooting the Rainer 350 grain HP's for 50 AE in my .50 S&W and they do OK. I'm using a roll crimp and haven't had any problems. I am shooting fairly light loads using titegroup and I'm gonna mess with some trail boss as soon as I accumulate enough brass for the next batch. I don't think I'd use them over something like H110 as I don't think you can crimp it tight enough to get good ignition . . . .of course I could be completely full of crap too.

Regards,
Dave

Better yet, why don't you just order yourself a hand-cannelure tool from www.Corbins.com and then you can add a crimping groove to any of the lead or brass jacketed bullets. Then just make sure the bullets are .500 and the weight you want.

I purchased one of these things recently for the same reasons you have raised and it works great! Cost just under $100 delivered.

Hope this helps,
lee

They work fine

I have been shooting Ranier 335's in my Smith 500 for quite some time, and due to the lack of a crimping groove I just use my 50 AE taper crimp die backed out of the press to put a good, hard .005" TC on the Smith 500 brass. I shoot these 335's over 30 grains of Alcan 8 and get about 1600 FPS, and have checked setback on the fifth unfired round, and the bullets never budge.
