Please carefully read my .02 USD
Sir, while you do not 'need' 20 or 30 guns, it is always better to have more guns!
Alright. Maybe your wife is holding your balls.
You do though, NEED, MUST HAVE AT ALL COSTS
1) A moderate-power semi-auto rifle or large carbine such as M4 (or automatic , if you can jump though the holes, and give up some rights, and spend a buttload of money) to:
-stop multiple armed threats at medium range quickly
-TSHTF
2) an Semi auto or pump shotgun, preferably of the common 12ga, 2 & 3/4 inches or more, to:
-Normal home defense
-Hunting winged fauna
3)Powerful Handgun, preferably semi-auto, in a round greater than or equal to .38 special (I recommend the 5.7x28mm, because its energy is equivalent of that to of .45ACP or +P 9mm Para and that you can stick 20 rounds into its magazine! 20 rounds of .45 ACP equivalents?!?!) to:
-Protect yourself from common criminals, etc
-Other legal CCW uses?
4) High-power, high accuracy rifle, preferably bolt-action, of something like .308 Win. To:
-Kill animals to feed your family, especially if TSHTF. I am not a hunter, you may want to ask around on tips.
-If TSHTF, you can use it to... well...
5) A .22lr gun, reliable beyond question. Must be built like a mountain, or merely indestructible. Why?
-So you can buy a quarter-million rounds of this for a a mere $5,000 USD (something like that)
-Then you can ensure you are able to keep practicing, and your children can keep practicing, and if you stretch it out, your grandkids can keep practicing... by then, if civilization hasn't rebuilt, well...
I could argue for at least another small carbine, of the PDW type, and a backup pistol, but then I'd get carried away and say you have to have a second gun of each type and then parts to fix them half a dozen times over...
EDIT: News! Apparently, if you are willing to have a slightly longer magazine, like, 1 and 3/4 inches sticking out, you can stick in 30 rounds of .45 ACP equivalents! In a pistol!
