Bersa Thunder .380

I highly recommend the Bersa Thunder .380 or the Bersa 9mm Sub Compact.

I have both, have fired many rounds through both with never a problem.

Both are inexpensive and I have now found back orders and waiting lists for both now as they have become very popular both for price and reliability.

I also see them sold under the Firestorm Brand name, same weapons, just another name.

Bersa, Ruger P series, CZ-82, Stoeger Cougar, Rock Island GI are all rugged and reliable and in your price range. I have various models of these and am pleased with all of them.

Taurus

Gets trashed here all the time. I have a 1911, which actually was not cheap. Great gun, on its own and compared to much more expensive ones. The (basic) mechanics and material of the gun aren't much different from the lower end models. Don't rule them out.

I do not know about the 1911 or 92 models. They may still be okay but there have been lots of problems with the smaller autos, the so celled plastic guns. Not like the old days. If somebody has an older 1911 or 92, they have a great. solid piece.

And their warranty service is horrible, taking over 2 weeks to just look at a gun and often 3 months to fix and return it.

I am not one to slam whole manufacturers and say such and such a model is crap but I used to think highly of Taurus and my opinion has gone way down.

I would vote for a Makarov. The 9x18mm round is kind of underpowered, but a Mak is tough as nails and will digest all sorts of ammo without complaint. It can be hard to find 9x 18mm in some parts of the country, but you can always order online.
As for politics, it's the shooter that has them, not the gun.
If you want a handgun even cheaper than that, you have to go with another Russian weapon- a Nagant revolver. They go for $80.00 to $100.00. 20lb. trigger pull and the factory 7.62mm ammo is anemic and expensive ( $23.00 for 50 rounds of Hotshot) but single action fire is accurate.
