Heist weapon a maiming machine

KATE DUBINSKI, Free Press Reporter 2005-08-22 01:20:45

The restricted semi- automatic rifle seized after last week's jewelry heist and police pursuit has a history as an easy-to-carry maiming machine.

"In the gang context, the AR-15 could be deemed a status symbol because it's small and light and compact in terms of assault rifles," said Marko Jugley, a gun owner and executive member of the Maple Leaf Marksmen Rifle and Revolver Club in St. Catherines.

The rifle's cartridges are also lightweight, allowing users to carry more ammunition at a time. That ammunition packs a nasty punch.

The rifle uses .223-calibre bullets -- also known as a 5.56 bullet -- which produces dramatic wounds. The bullet enters the body and quickly turns sideways, breaking into two major pieces and many small fragments.

The AR-15 is a civilian version of the M-16, used during the Vietnam War and designed to maim and incapacitate soldiers, said John Kellaway, president of the Maple Leaf club.

U.S. soldiers in Vietnam reported the bullets did not kill quickly and they often found the enemy by following a path of blood to a body.

An AR-15 assault rifle was found after four men walked into Anstett Jewellers in White Oaks shopping mall on Wednesday and stole an undisclosed amount of jewelry.

The men then led London Police on a wild chase through suburbs in the city's south end, at times hanging out of the sunroof of their vehicle, pointing the high-powered firearm at police cruisers, according to witness accounts.

At least one shot was fired at police, ricocheting off of the windshield of a cruiser, leaving a hole and slightly injuring an officer in the vehicle.

The rifle can be modified and weighs 2.9 kilograms to 3.6 kg.

The rifle can be modified to hold up to 40 rounds of ammunition, but in Canada is only allowed to hold five rounds in a detachable magazine.

Popular in gangsta rap lyrics, the weapon has drawn unwelcome attention in several high-profile shootings.

The AR-15 was used by snipers who terrorized the Washington, D.C., area in the fall of 2002. One woman was killed and several other people were injured in the attacks.

U.S. police warned the public the man known as the Olympic Park Bomber -- who detonated a bomb at the 1996 Atlanta games -- was known to carry an AR-15 rifle.

In Canada, the weapon is restricted.

"You used to be able to use it for hunting, but now it's restricted and all you can basically do with it is target practice," Kellaway said.

The starting cost is about $800 and the price can go as high as $3,000, depending on modifications.

Wednesday's heist left two men dead -- one of them Sean Patrick McGrath, 37, of Montreal -- and two in hospital. One of the survivors, Akili Roberts, 25, of Montreal, is charged with robbery.

:what:

gosh, those things are dangerous..... This piece is so over the top, I don't even know where to begin.

That gun club needs a better 'spokesman', methinks....

Weird, the AR-15 is a 'restricted' weapon in Canada. I'm sure those robbers went through all the governmental hoops to legally get that rifle. /sarcasm

PE90.jpg

This little gem is unrestricted and arguably a better rifle than the AR. They fire the same 'maiming' 5.56mm round too.

Now if we could just get the damn ATF to allow importation of this unrestricted sporting rifle that even Canadians are allowed to own. :fire:

canada is ass backwards. that spokesman is probably an anti gun canadian govt official in reality.

Lol, it is different:) The article has some accurate facts, lol, but the spokesman is so naive! Lol. You have to admit it's better journalism, though.

Ok the spokesman is completely stupid. Or maybe he's part-time spokesman and his day job is in law enforcement?

Actually boofus, that picture you posted looks like a SIG SG-550 or a variant thereof - they are illegal in Canada. You did get my hopes up for a second there, though :)

And :barf: for my country's gun laws.

I might be wrong but wasn't more than one person killed in all that "sniper" business?

Mark my words, more people would've been killed had the moron picked a real sniper rifle.

That's the Swiss Arms PE90. Externally, it looks like the SG550 but the internals are different. Plus the manufacturer is different from the SIG rifles. The Canada ban names the restricted guns by manufacturer and model, so the PE90 is allowed. Nice loophole aye? :D

www.theshootingedge.com has them listed on page 5 of their catalog as unrestricted for $2999 Cdn dollars.

The carbine and CQB versions seem to be restricted. I wish we could get the 'sporting' version here in the states. :(

Retarded.

There were, iirc, 12 or 13 people killed in the DC "sniper" business, with .223 Wolf ammo. One or two were shot but lived.

If they can't even get their most basic facts straight, I don't trust the accuracy of any other part of their drivel there.

The press and politicians will always be able to find "sportsmen" who will tell them that some gun or other is evil, should be banned, "has no sporting use", etc., etc. Sometimes these guys are so blinded by politics that they lose all concept of self-interest, sometimes they are paid well for their "unbiased" statements, sometimes they really believe that their gun game (hunting, trap/skeet shooting, small bore rifle) is the only legitimate use for a gun.

Every anti-gun candidate in recent history has had his "Sportsmen for X" or "Hunters for X" or staged photo ops showing him "hunting". We need to educate our people that the anti-gun gang really does mean them and their chosen guns. The cold fact is that the intent is to ban ALL individually owned guns, even air guns and spring guns, and to eliminate or severely restrict the carrying of guns by state and local police. One group has proposed that guns be issued only to special federal agents, and then only when and if absolutely needed, not for general carry.

If you still think "they" won't ban shotguns, or .22 rifles, or hunting guns, or police guns, think again.

AR-15 style rifles are common. That's the only reason they show up so frequently. They are reasonbly priced, fire cheap ammo, and have a variety of utilitarian purposes. The only reason they get demonized is because they don't have wooden furniture, are similar to what the military uses, and appear scary to techno-illiterate retards.

Probably about 80% of my "gun buddies" have some derivative of the AR-15 in their collection.

"The only reason they get demonized is because they don't have wooden furniture, are similar to what the military uses, and appear scary to techno-illiterate retards."

The problem is that those "techno-illiterate retards" vote, and someone like John Kerry (all American hero and winner of four wars and two dozen police actions all by himself) can play on that fear to gain office then ban all guns as being "dangerous".

"Designed to maim and incapacitate.." Gee, pal, thanks for describing every single solitary weapon ever designed by anyone, ever, anywhere. Moron.

I hate journalists, with a burning, fiery passion.

*** is this!?!?!?

Yeah were gonna bash the weapon as a maiming amchine? ***!!!

Friggin reporters are friggin dumbarses.

Lets bash that Ar15 instead of the illegal people using them.

I thought the snipers used an AK variant in .223...
Am I wrong?

And the part about the Olympic Park Bomber. So what? He allegedly carried an AR-15. He did not shoot anyone at the park, did he?

The Swiss Arms PE90 is the civilian version of the SIG SG550 , it is semi auto only . It has been available in Canada for 3 years . The Sig 550 series is made by Swiss Arms in Switzerland ,and starting a month ago the carbine ( 551 semi auto ) and the CQB ( 552 semi auto ) are now available in Canada . As the previouis post mention the Canadian importer is The Shooting Edge in Calgary .

Here is a pic of the Swiss Arms PE90 available in Canada.....

Here is the Carbine and CQB................

Boy, that PE90 is a nice lookin' piece. Too bad our :cuss: gun laws mean that we would be using it with 5-round magazines. Plus 3k ain't cheap :)
