Bigsplash, pard;
We will have to disagree on this topic, because in my opinion (of course) it IS "that bad".
I'm not speaking from a standpoint of inexperience here. I lived in Canada from 1947 to 1997, served in the Canadian Army, was active politically, and watched our freedoms progressively erode through successive governments, both Liberal AND Conservative.
Are you aware of some of the provisions of Canadian law? Do you know that if you're in a vehicle, discover a gun is in there with you, and you don't take steps to find out if someone has "paper" on that gun, YOU have committed an indictable offense? Or, if you DO discover that there's no "paper" on that gun and you don't immediately take steps to leave the vehicle, YOU have committed an indictable offense? Or, if a gun search in your home is being carried out (for "firearms, ammunition, or papers pertaining thereto" ) you are required to co-operate with the search? And that SILENCE IS CONSIDERED TO BE NON-CO-OPERATION, and is an indictable offense....whatever happened to the English common-law "right to remain silent"?
(Note for US readers: An "indictable offense" corresponds to a felony, while "summary conviction offences" correspond to misdemeanors. Most of the above "offenses" carry $10,000 fines and/or five years' prison time.)
You also don't mention that handguns and MANY rifles and shotguns are "restricted weapons" and can ONLY be used at government-approved ranges, and can only be transported to the range with yet another damned permit issued only for range use...and it can specify routes of travel, times iof day, and days of the week, and "no errands en route". Restricted weapons MUST be trigger-locked, AND inside a locked container, AND separate from the ammunition. Ask me, I lived with this horsecrap for decades and it's worse now. Also, no semi-auto rifle can have a mag capacity larger than five rounds, except a few specific exemptions such as the M1 Garand.
There is NO handgun hunting in Canada.... none, nada, zip, rien, zero.....
In Nevada, by extreme contrast:
-I have a concealed-carry licence, and can carry my handguns where and as I please....concealed. The licence is SHALL ISSUE, meaning it MUST be issued if the applicant meets a few simple requirements
-I can carry my handguns openly, downtown, on the land, fishing, whatever.
-I can take any of my guns (repeat: ANY of my guns) to any safe shooting area and use them without permission from any damned government, and this specifically includes machine guns if I ever get rich enough to buy one.
-I can keep a loaded handgun in my vehicle...concealed, openly, any way I prefer.
-I can hunt with my handguns.
-I can walk into any store in the State and walk out with a new handgun or long gun, just by filling out a single form which stays with the dealer.
-I can go my friend's house and borrow any of his guns, of any type (try THAT in Canada while staying within the letter of the law).
As a shooter, I am infinitely better off here in the USA. As a citizen, I breathe far more freely and have a great deal more input into the organizations that govern me. I was proud to be a Canadian, but I'm a damned sight happier as an ardent American.
