Ok, SKY

First, that isn't a safe ^^^^
Read the above

A real safe would have been more difficult and bought more time,
your friend got robbed by someone HE KNOWS think about this, the KNEW where his stuff was, and came prepared. Locksmiths move huge ol safes all the time, and those are the real deal, the stuff you DON'T put on unreinforced floors. Having a metal box to store your stuff doesn't make you 'safe'.

A real safe would weigh more, and take longer and more skill, that's all.

Sky...Look at the back outside top corners of your safe...See a ProSteel label? If so, it may have been made in China.

No doubt the guy with his whole safe stolen was from someone who knew he had a safe and guns. Could have been a laborer or some acquaintance that told someone who knew someone etc etc. I have only seen the man once and he is a shooter at the range and strong supporter of gun rights. After the theft many at the range were asking if everyone had heard his place had been cleaned out. There were people who were blaming everyone from government officials to Mexican Drug cartels. Nothing that I am aware of has been recovered but everyone said the thieves were very good at what they did.

The only label says on my safe;

Granite Security Products, Inc.
Product: Gun Safe
Mtg. Date 04/01/04 -06/30/04

If it is Chinese they are getting better!! hahaha

The original paperwork said it was fire proof for 30 or 45 minutes up to 1200 or 1450 degrees fahrenheit? Sorry I do not have the paperwork without digging and really do not remember. I had looked at safes all over my area and thought most were cheap over priced junk unless you wanted to spend over $2000. Some of the guys I know have safes that are more like a gun vaults than a typical home gun safe but for me I am happy with my purchase; so far. I do believe determined thieves can defeat just about any stand alone safe unless their are multiple layers of security before the safe is ever touched. Anyway that's my 2 cents and I am certainly no expert.

Anyway my point was there can be deals had and money saved on some of the safes damaged in shipping that places will not sell as new due to a paint blemish. I am actually starting to look or think about another safe so I can keep from stacking my guns like sardines in a can. Would buy another safe like I have now if I could find the same kinda deal.

I know nothing about Granite safes. I just know the Bass Pro's RedHead safes have been made by ProSteel for the past few years and alot of their safes are imported.

Now look inside the frame
there will be a small sticker or a line of small print on a label
"MADE IN CHINA"
Granite is a importer
that relabels, they do lots of the 'custom' label stuff for places like Gander Mountain and Dicks, and Bass Pro Shop. Sane box as a stackon, prettier paint...

Once again, take some time to learn what a safe is, and you see that gunsafes are the equivalent of late night TV 'all natural' Viagra infomercials, with just as much BS and 'testimonial' of how you don't need a real safe, this one will do it all... So skip the Snake Oil, and please learn, that everything from a Browning (gun maker LICENSED) to stack-ons are gym lockers with a good paint job and afew gimmicks. There are quality gunsafes, often they aren't the MOST expensive (those are the big NAME BRAND) but they are still not SAFES, they are just alot sturdier than mild steel, single wall 16ga boxes.

hahahah Promise that is the only label I have found and it is on the bottom of the door; top of the door has an American flag inside the frame with the proper stars and bars. Darn communist sneaky buggars are everywhere "if" it is indeed an import!

Granite has an interesting recent history, as it has been owned by some fairly large safe manufacturers. What I found interesting was how few employees they had running it, even when they were producing safes here in the US. I believe it was fewer than 10 people, as most of the process was automated.

If you have an older model, it was probably made here in the US. The rounded door corners are usually the giveaway on the US versions. I don't know when they stopped US production, but everything that they have sold for the last few years, that I know of, is Chinese.

My Granite is older and proudly displays an American flag inside the door. It is several years old from Sams Club.

Granite security currently makes Winchester safes which are imported, but those round edged laser cut doors do indicate a better built safe compared to what they make now. Just like all safe manufactures, the starting line products aren't much but the upper line products are built up more. I have one of these laser cut door, granite Winchester safes in my home. Although it does act as the dummy safe while a national security safe backs up the real valuables. National security's are no longer made. To answer questions about the e-locks I would recommend a S&G as they seem to be reliable. American security has their own elock that seems to do well also. Stay away from securam elocks.
