Academy sells a 22 long-gun fire safe with electronic lock for $899. It weighs 600lbs and has an ETL fire rating on one hour.

Academy sells various Canon and other brands of gun safes that have less fire rating time, hold less guns and weigh less but cost much more.

Am I overlooking something? I need to replace my entry level non-fireproof safe with something substantial. I'm trying to stay around $1,000.

USE THE SEARCH FUNCTION

OR GOOGLE THR AND YOUR QUESTION

this is an oft repeated subject, kinda wish the mods would sticky one of the treads.

OH and for your money, you get a gym locker with a pretty lock and maybe something a little better than wall board, until you get to UL class B and a UL fire rating, well, how was the safe positioned and when was the time started? My point is, that while any safe is better than nothing, spending alot of money sometimes just buys a pretty paint job.

sleepyone,

RE: prices differences of those safes, maybe it's because they differ in how thick the steel is (more steel is better), and/or one has a better warranty than the other.

You need to look at all their specs (and warranties) in order to do a good comparison.

Shadow 7D,

Oh...didn't know you were "talking sheet metal" here. :-0

Yeah...I know plenty about 'safes' (and a whole lot of other things, which one should at my age). And I also know how often certain topics keep coming up over and over again (because most posters NEVER check first and that'll never change). I just thought I'd give a simple, short response to start things off for the OP.

Thanks anyway for your instruction.

I was talking to the OP, not anyone else (so-called 'experts' or not), and didn't know how much HE knew. So I was keeping it simple. Besides, even re: sheetmetal 'safes,' their sheet-metal gauges can differ between brands/models. And it doesn't matter how many 'whacks' it takes to get into it, usually it's more about what someone can afford. Still, the thicker guage, the better. Period.

If I don't have your permission to respond as I want because you think I ight be clueless or ignorant or maybe don't help anyone here -- even if I am trying -- I can go back and delete everything I've posted so far (used to post lots here but that was years ago). Just get a Mod to agree and I'll do it...let me know.

P.S. I'm not going to research every post to see if it's also being discussed elsewhere. As you say, questions should be researched, but it's the 'asker' who needs to do the researching before posting, not the reponders...they just respond.
