Cant deside between

A new pistol, shotgun, or an ar/ak. Will have about 600 or so to spend on one of theses.

I voted AR or AK, because my next planned purchase is an AR (mid september, so I'm sure I'll get something between now and then).

If you get an AK you'll have enough left over for two or three 75 round drums and a case or two of ammo.

It all depends on:

1. What you've already got - what holes in the collection need to be filled?

2. Why you want it - what is the gun's intended purpose? (I wouldn't buy a 1911 to hunt ducks, if I were you! :D ).

Since only you can answer those questions, I don't think our votes are going to be very helpful...

Well i only have 1 pistol. A new pistol just to have a backup. Shotgun for trap, skeet and HD. The AR/AK just for fun plus it could also be used for HD.

Ah Rikki;

This is a steep & slippery slope you're on. Trap/skeet & Home Defence are sometimes considered to be mutually exclusive parameters. Of course, someone is sure to disagree, but WTH.

While $600.00 will aquire a perfectly useable HD gun, there are those who may consider that amount only a down payment for the trap/skeet gun. In fact there are those, whom reside out of the 'Dew Drop Inn' circle, who wouldn't even consider the $600.00 as an acceptable d-p.

The shottie crowd can spend money. After all, it's perfectly possible to place an order for a 'live' gun that will buy a small house. Let's say something in the $80,000.00 range. Or up. That's without any fancy inlay or engraving mind you.

Most decent used Browning Citori's are selling for more than $600.00 in this neck of the woods.

Well seeing has i have only once or twice before shot trap/skeet this would just be somthing to start out with.

Now Rikki, I think you need a good entry level shotgun. If you are a beginner go for a good pump like an 870. Excellent for defense and trap, a bit slow for skeet and sporting clays. Not that it can't be overcome with practice. Next step up would be a good semi-auto. Beretta 391, Rem 11-87, Win SX2. All good reliable semis but will max out your $600. Would be tough to find an O/U shotgun of quality used for under $800.

Check the shotgun forum here for more info.

I think everybody needs a short barreled (18-20") shotgun for their home defense battery. It's got a lot more stopping power than a pistol and for around the home, it's much more useful and versatile than a rifle unless you live literally miles from your nearest neighbors. If you don't like the recoil of a 12ga, go with a 20ga or use light recoil "tactical loads".

Heck for $600, you probably could get an NIB Mossberg Persuader AND a SAR AK.

I am mainly a pistol person so I voted for pistol.

But if $600 is all you are going to have for the year, I would spread it out and get a few good pieces, a Makarov, Arcus 94, or Bersa Thunder, used Remington 870, and SAR-1.

Well if you got 600 to spend I would get another HKUSP40:) It would really depend on what I needed right now I would buy a Aim Point with a mount or save a few more $ for an ACOG.Just my 2 cents HKUSP$)

I agree with WhoKnownWho...if you have $600 to spend you should spread it out. You can get SAR-1s for $329 on Altantic Firearms, and a new Arcus 9mm for about $250 on AIM surplus. Makarovs go for about $150+, but I am more of a big pistol person myself.

If you want to go the shotgun route, there are some viable options that others can reccomend, though AIM surplus is selling UCN 1201 12 gauge pumps for $160. I'm no expert in shotguns, so I can't tell you much more.

An AR will cost you at least $650, if you invest in a flattop and a back up iron sight, which you definitely should. Trust me, you will thank yourself for getting that flattop instead of a fixed carry handle later when you go to put optics on it, or so I have been advised.

I vote with Greg L, lots of history books!:p

You don't give enough info to offer a good selection of guns. Hard to go wrong with an 870 Express, though.:D

Have shotty, several handguns, but no AR-type. Do have SKS, though, and the US Rifle Cal 30 M-1 Popularly Known As The "Garand"

$600?
Remington 870 Combo from Walmart for $330ish
Saiga 7.62x39 (add US parts and dremel it later to make it a proper AK) for about $230.
$140 left for ammo, which is about 1k of 7.62x39 and 400 rounds of birdshot.

Now you've got a shotgun for home defense and trap (combo package is a 28" remchoke barrel and a 20" improved barrel for buck/slugs) and an AK. :D

I already have a couple nice pistols and a good shotgun for hunting so next on my list is an AR15. All I need is the money.

it's much more useful and versatile than a rifle unless you live literally miles from your nearest neighbors
END

Not really true. A 223 is safer to use in homes because it has less overpentration risks than typical handgun loads. Its about equal to buckshot. Now larger rifle calibers do present problems.
