Actually, THAT is incorrect. When I lived in California, albeit many moons ago, the only restriction on rifles was it could not be modified to accept magazines with more capacity than OEM mags. Handguns could not accept more than 15 rounds. IOW, Glock was alright with 15 round mags, an SHS modded to take AK mags wasn't, even if you put a 10 round mag in it.
Back home in Ohio, there are no restrictions more stringent than federal law. Well, except for that "31 rounds is a machine gun" that's going away this spring.
I lived in Virginia for a while, but I can't comment on the laws because I spent most of my time "living" there deployed. Never bought a gun there.
