CANTON
Police officer Daniel Harless, who threatened to kill a motorist during a June 2011 traffic stop, won't return to the police department.
The city reached a settlement with Harless Tuesday that resolves all legal disputes.
The city agrees to the following:
• Pay Harless $40,000 within 30 days.
• Not challenge Harless's participation in the state workers' compensation system. Harless suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder from a 2003 incident.
• Issue Harless a retired-officer ID upon his providing proof of regular or disability retirement through the Ohio Police and Fire Pension System.
• Provide a neutral recommendation for all future employment, providing only factual details of his employment. The settlement acknowledges that
Harless agrees to:
• Resign in writing effective from the termination date on January 2012.
• Drop all other legal claims and grievances against the city.
• Not seek future employment with the city.
• Not file any future claims against the city.
Harless became the center of controversy after video surfaced on the Internet of his conduct during a traffic stop in the early morning hours of June 2011. Harless is seen screaming at the driver, William Bartlett of Brewster, for failing to immediately notify him that he was carrying a concealed weapon.
The city fired Harless, a 15-year veteran of the police force, after discovering two similar incidents. Last year, an arbitrator ordered that Harless be returned to work pending medical clearance. In a rare move, the city appealed the arbitrator's binding decision, saying that it was flawed and did not set a limit to when Harless could return to work.
As part of the settlement, which was reached after months of ongoing discussions between the city and Harless's attorney, both sides agree that they will make no public comment.

Because no company ever Googles the name of possible hires

After one of your hissy fits or tantrums make national news, and people see what happens when you get angry like that, you can pretty much kiss any real career out the window.

I remember an article by ol' time Border Patrolman Skeeter Skelton entitled (quote from memory) so you wanna be a lawman; one of the points was if you could not take a lot of [stuff] and still keep your temper, law enforcement was not the right field to enter.

PTSD can happened to even the toughest. It is no joke, nor is it an excuse. It needs to be recognized and treated to help prevent incidents such as this.

Sounds like the dangerous, out-of-control and violent copper made out very well.

Shame.

Guy who should be serving time is now out looking for a job in one of our communities.

Great job. Your Judicial System (hardly) at work.

The tradition of the Thin Blue Line continues.

Rest well, America.

He sure seemed to get a lot out of this! $40,000 for what??? What do his victims get? That's what I'd like to know.

If a regular citizen did what he did, they'd be charged with assault with a deadly weapon, disorderly conduct (of course), intimidating a witness, blah, blah, blah!

But this guy, who violated the public trust, actually received a payment from the taxpayers of $40,000, and then gets to collect unemployment. No jail time, no fines. Basically, he lost nothing at all. He only gained.

he gets a sweet pension that starts paying him a living wage now.... and some sort of health insurance im sure. his retirement credentials..... I see sandy beaches in his future.

That settlement should have prohibited him from gun ownership.

Issue a retired Police Officer ID??? THIS IS INSANE!

He's going to be entitled to all the "Blue Label Glocks" that he wants.
