Carried for the first time today

Well I got home from my exam today and my carry permit that I had been waiting for was on the counter. It finally came in the mail!

So i put my Makarov in my falco IWB holster and covered up with a light jacket. Then I drove out to the bookstore looking for a Christmas present for the fiance and spent a while there.

For the first ten minutes I had to resist a huge urge to tug at the gun, pull down my jacket, and twist my head around and make sure I wasnt printing. But after the fist half hour of browsing the urge had subsided to simply resisting the temptation to tug on my jacket every 5 minutes and by the time I was ready to leave it wasnt bugging half as much as when I went in.

All in all it was pretty cool to be able to do something that most people in the developed world are prohibited from doing and to take more responsibility for my own safety

Way to go! It should become pretty natural in no time, and then you'll forget it's there much of the time. If you're like me, you'll take to carrying like you've never taken to anything else - I really hate to have to take my gun off, and so far have only done it to go into medical buildings, and once for a concert at the Hous of Blues (metal detectors).

And carrying a Makarov at that--I can see you are a man who appreciates the good things in life. I don't usually carry my Mak any more, but I did for quite some time. I still carry it sometimes just for old time's sake.
 
BSR ....... good news indeed. |As Bear says .. walk tall ... and don;t forget the awesome responsibility inherent in your decion to carry.

The feeling of ''obviousness'' does soon wear off but gotta say ... i am still all too aware all time when out.

I think the thing is .. practice and develop real subtle ''check measures'' .. I find now I can assess and check with nothing more obvious than seeming as if i am going for my wallet .... or having a scratch!!!:p

Stay safe ..... and hope to never ever have to use it.
 
Wouldn't it be nice to not have to ask for permission to exercize your God-given, constitutionally-RECOGNIZED/ACKNOWLEDGED, (not GRANTED), right to bear arms?

Carrying for the first time is... liberating. It's even more of a liberating experience when you exercize sovereignty over your own life instead of granting that sovereignty to a government entity.

While during the winter months, I normally carry a full-size Springfield 1911, I still often carry my EG Makarov. It is VERY light, and amazingly accurate.

Just out of curiosity, what rounds do you prefer to carry (for the Makarov)?

while your constatntly going through the tug of your shirt an jacket bottom the the normal (read: code white) folks will just figure your anal retentive about your appearence.

your car is your friend

use it to situate your appearence before you get out.

an me. i keep my carry piece opposite side of my wallet an use an ld leatherman pouch for a spare mag carry. its cheaper, has velcro flap, looks mundane (doesnt scream GUN MAGAZINE!!!!)

I use barnaul 95 gr HP
they are uber cheap and so they are my practice round also
I used to be skeptical of how good they are until I say a picture from Mr. Camp from when he shot one into water to test the expansion and it was an impresssive expander to say the least
(i know thats not perfect ballistics test but i cant afford any ballistic gelatin right now...although that would be cool)
I am considering some of Georgia Arms' gold dot cartridges, they are too expensive.....http://www.georgia-arms.com/power.htm

I also use the HP Barnaul rounds. I buy as many boxes as I can when I go to a gun show.

It is very fortunate that this round is available, because as you said - it is feasible to use for practice, as well as everyday carry - without exhorbitant expense.

The Barnaul ammo is also incredibly accurate and reliable to be such inexpensive ammo - same goes for the gun. I have owned two Makarovs, and neither has ever malfunctioned. I've also recommended others buy one, and so far no one that I know that has bought one has regretted it.

Great News!!!!! As others have said in time you will get so used to it being their that you will not feel it. It will get to be like your wallet. Its there but you are so used to it that you dont notice. I had the same issues as you when I first started carrying. It will go away in time.

Caution...

Be careful to not get TOO comfortable with the heater on your hip!

I know a guy who got in some hot water for removing his jacket in a restaurant, exposing his piece in front of crowd of nervous sheeples.

Carrying concealed is best kept that way, IMHO.
 
I never had a permit for years and never gave it much thought but after I started gun collecting and getting more involved with shooting sports I starting applying for permits that would cover me in the states I travel in. Now I have 5 permits that cover me in approx. 26 states. I have a resident permit in Alabama, and non Resident Permits in Connecticut, Florida, Maine and New Hampshire. I should be getting my Pennsylvania Permit back anytime now and I'll apply for a Tennessee Permit next. It's a shame to have to get permission to do what the Constitution already provides for.

I'm always glad when a new CCW hits the streets. I carry a Mak, too (an East German).

I have carried everyday now since October when I got my CCW permit. It was really awkward at first and I would catch myself "feeling like I was doing something wrong. Isn't that crazy, I am about as pro gun as you can get and fought hard with others to get some of our freedoms back here in Minnesota and I still felt that way. Well it didn't take many days to understand its our RIGHT and other than a few minor changes in dress and being aware of where I was,and where I was going everything has been OK. I started with a S&W 642, but now that I'm more comfortable I carry a SIG 239 or a Kimber Pro-Carry from time to time just to mix it up a bit. I have been guilty of one thing however, I haven't been to the range lately and we all know how important practice is.

In addition to always tugging at your clothes.
You'll start noticing others who are carrying, and tugging at their clothes.
I was out the other day when I noticed a guy wearing a fanny pack(man bag). The thing looked like it had a brick in it. You know he was packing.
I also notice that I hold my arm over my carry like I'm injured or something.
Hard habit for me to break.
 
Congrats are in order for taking responsibility for your own safety. I can only hope that we here someday throw off the leftist shackles!
