I use Speer, Hornady, Federal, Winchester, Fiocchi, PPU, and Silver Bear in various calibers in various guns ... and that list may not be all inclusive. Everything seems to run Gold Dots happily, though, at least in anything that I can find a reasonably priced GDHP in.
And I generally have my carry gun loaded with ammo "X", and a reload of ammo "Y", just because I've considered that problems could be related to a batch/lot or the age of the ammo ... both "X" & "Y" would be high-quality loads suitable for defensive use, sometimes just a newer batch in the gun and an older batch of the same ammo in the reload, or vice-versa
Limiting yourself to only one load for carry/defense/whatever is sort of silly, anything you can pick up reliably in a non-chump-box* should be tested out and evaluated, keeping in mind that the difference between various quality expanding bullet designs is fairly minor compared to the necessity for reliability of the ammo/gun/magazine matchup. If you know your gun feeds and ejects Speer Gold Dots and Federal EFMJ - for example - stock both whenever you encounter them at a decent price. The same applies to any quality defensive load, really.
**"chump-box": (n) A box of ammunition of 25 or less rounds at a markup only someone who doesn't know better (or someone who doesn't test their ammo) would pay
**"non-chump-box: (n) the same ammunition packaged in more reasonable sizes at more reasonable prices. Sometimes marked with "LE sales" nonsense, a slightly different part#, or similar.
