Carry an M&P? Educate me !

I have shot, handled and mauled an M&P, and loved every minute of it. However, as someone that is old school growing up/owning pistols with external safety, as in my 92f, I'm alittle leary of trigger only safeties. Is anyone concerned about ND's or AD's, whichever you want to call them? Does the trigger safety actually work? What about when you holster and your shirt tail gets caught? or some such thing? I will humble myself and admit in front of all I am not 100% what makes the trigger safety work. I have visions of Glock leg happening with the M&P though. As Bill O'reilly would say "what say you". As always, thanks for your input.

I own and carry a M&P 9C as my primary carry gun. I don't really put a lot of faith it he trigger safety of the M&P. Honestly, I like the design of the Glocks trigger safety more than the M&Ps. That being said, I LOVE my M&P. I have two rules for carrying it though.

1. ONLY a rigid holster. I will NOT wiggle that thing around to trying to push it down into a holster. Thats a good way to shoot yourself in the butt.

2. Finger OFF the trigger. Very important.

I carry mine in a Comp-Tac kydex IWB holster or a Galco JIT slide belt holster. I have total confidence in it. I didn't like the idea of the lack of a safety but I've determined to learn the discipline for the sake of carrying such a stellar weapon. My M&P is really accurate and I am totally confident in it. I have had very few guns that are its equal. Invest in a good holster or two and I think you'll agree.

The trigger safety is supposed to help ensure that only your finger, fully wrapped around the trigger, should be able to fire the gun. The trigger is hinged in the middle and the movement of the bottom half of the trigger disables the safety. If only the top half is pushed back the trigger will not move sufficiently to fire. In practice, it is possible for other things to push the lower trigger half sufficiently - e.g., a shirt tail, sweatshirt drawstring (I strongly suggest avoiding this type of garment), holster lip - or, for that matter, your own finger, in the trigger guard when it is not supposed to be.

Well, if you want a M&P, I have two options for you:

1.) As noted above, get a rigid holster and be careful while holstering.

2.) Buy a M&P45 with slide safety.

You really should be careful when holstering any gun. A kydex holster and a little care when holstering makes an M&P or Glock perfectly safe to carry.

As of right now, yes only the .45. I've heard rumors that S&W will debut some 9's and .40's with external safties at the SHOT Show, but it's just rumored at this point.

Rumors I've seen over at the M&P pistol forum for this years SHOT show are for both a mid-sized (4" barrel?) and compact .45, both with the option of a manual safety, as well as a 5" 9mm.

My wife has been serving in Iraq for the last eight months. She called me today and one of the things she asked me is if I was taking care of her M&P 9mm (no I'm not kidding) I told her it was fine. She told me she REALLY wishes she had it over there. She has carried an M9 in a shoulder holster everywhere she has gone for the last eight months and she wants me to get her one but her favorite is still her M&P.

The M&P's also have a detent ball that will block the sear from releasing. There is a triangular piece on the trigger assembly that pushes this ball up. In addition to this is the regular sear. So in this regard there cannot be an AD by dropping the firearm. As far as the shirt issue, I just unloaded the gun and literally stuffed the shirt through the trigger guard and holstered it, if you push hard enough it WILL fire. So it has its downfalls but unless something is on the trigger it will not fire.
