Carrying an N frame revolver for ccw

When I was a young man, a full-size 1911 or Smith 28 seemed to be perfect carry pieces. But now that I am “seasoned,” smaller guns like the SIG 365 or Smith CSX or even the Smith 43c are far more appealing.

It is not that I can’t conceal a larger gun; I simply prefer not to conceal a larger gun.

I've carried a few different "N" frame revolvers concealed. I used Bianchi shoulder holsters. Mostly in the Winter time while wearing a jacket and while in the woods. But sometimes I got so used to it that I forgot I was wearing it and carried it into stores!

An L frame Model 686 is about the biggest revolver I would want to carry for CCW. It would definitely be with some sort of shoulder holster set-up as I really don't want all that weight on my waist.

An unloaded N frame 329 weighs little more than a loaded 365 or Glock 26.

Still not a very flat gun but I can forget I have it on my waist though.

I currently carry a 627 2.6 inch 8 shot 357 IWB with a Mernickle holster. I carry it in a fanny pack when I am working outside at home. | load it with 158 grain Buffalo Bore +p “Heavy Outdoorsman” 38 specials.

For a period of time, I carried a 4" M25 .45LC somewhat regularly in a Hoffners Miurage kydex IWB.
I also own several other leather IWB holsters which work pretty well, but the Hoffners is my favorite.
After 65 years of "active lifestyle" e.g., crashing dirt and street motorcycles repeatedly...my airframe has suffered significant "repeated stresses" and my spine has endured three surgeries. So carrying an N-frame is a "somewhat limited activity" for me these days.
I currently own a shoulder holster for my 1911, and am looking for a shoulder holster for an N-frame as well. TBH, 4-8 hours of carrying a steel frame 1911 wears on my 150-lb frame a bit, but maybe I just haven't found the right holster yet.

Heck, if I could find one of the original Bloodwork guns, I'd carry it just because. The 5" 627 PC and the 4" 627 Pro are great guns, regardless of the MIM and The Lock issues. I could see myself carrying an 8-shot N frame in .357, concealed. Especially if I could reload like Jerry Miculek...

For me, it's not all about the size and weight, even larger handguns can be concealed fairly effectively (admittedly, body type plays into this), it's about how much I like the gun and how well I can shoot it...

I'm 5'6" 170 pounds. 33" waist (currently I'm overweight). Carrying a handgun of that size would require a puffy jacket- which would look very strange most of the time in Fl, especially with the camelbak I would also need to wear in order to constantly hydrate with in order to prevent heatstroke.

I did once carry a 6" Model 28 concealed, but as FL-NC notes here in Florida it's really only possible in the dead of winter! Otherwise the big coat looks conspicuous.

I routinely carry one of these. I am in Idaho and the climate often requires a jacket or sweatshirt, especially up in the mountains (which are everywhere). In summer I usually wear a button shirt that is untucked (Vertex makes a good one). Before retirement I was plainclothes LE and routinely carried a Glock 21 (duty weapon).

When carrying a gun this size, or even bigger, comfortably, you have to have the right holster and gun belt to support and spread the weight around your waist. This could mean the right off the shelf holster or a custom holster. I prefer the custom holsters as you can work with the holster maker to build one to suit your needs. I carry my 3" Ruger GP-100 in a Tucker holster IWB. The belt is a 1.5" wide Don Hume Gunbelt. I use the same belt for most of my holster needs. I can carry the GP-100 fully loaded all day comfortably. It's not a "Pretty" holster, but wearing it inside the waistband so it doesn't need to be.

If I lived in a locale that complete concealment is not paramount I would in a minute. A full size gun fighting pistol would be hard for me to pull off. But, my 629 3” would be top on my list if a print or a flash or two wasn’t a problem.
